τὸν ἀγῶνα τὸν καλὸν ἠγώνισμαι τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα·
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
ἰδού ἔρχομαι ταχύ· κράτει ὃ ἔχεις ἵνα μηδεὶς λάβῃ τὸν στέφανόν σου
Behold, I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
λόγον ζωῆς ἐπέχοντες εἰς καύχημα ἐμοὶ εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ ὅτι οὐκ εἰς κενὸν ἔδραμον οὐδὲ εἰς κενὸν ἐκοπίασα
Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
ἐγὼ τοίνυν οὕτως τρέχω ὡς οὐκ ἀδήλως οὕτως πυκτεύω ὡς οὐκ ἀέρα δέρων·
I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
Ἐτρέχετε καλῶς· τίς ὑμᾶς ἀνέκοψεν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι
Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
כִּי אֶת-רַגְלִים׀ רַצְתָּה וַיַּלְאוּךָ וְאֵיךְ תְּתַֽחֲרֶה אֶת-הַסּוּסִים וּבְאֶרֶץ שָׁלוֹם אַתָּה בוֹטֵחַ וְאֵיךְ תַּעֲשֶׂה בִּגְאוֹן הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃
If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?
Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς ὑπομένει πειρασμόν ὅτι δόκιμος γενόμενος λήψεταί τὸν στέφανον τῆς ζωῆς ὃν ἐπηγγείλατο ὁ Κύριος τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
ἀνέβην δὲ κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν· καὶ ἀνεθέμην αὐτοῖς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ὃ κηρύσσω ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν κατ' ἰδίαν δὲ τοῖς δοκοῦσιν μήπως εἰς κενὸν τρέχω ἢ ἔδραμον
And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
שַׁבְתִּי וְרָאֹה תַֽחַת-הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ כִּי לֹא לַקַּלִּים הַמֵּרוֹץ וְלֹא לַגִּבּוֹרִים הַמִּלְחָמָה וְגַם לֹא לַחֲכָמִים לֶחֶם וְגַם לֹא לַנְּבֹנִים עֹשֶׁר וְגַם לֹא לַיֹּדְעִים חֵן כִּי-עֵת וָפֶגַע יִקְרֶה אֶת-כֻּלָּֽם׃
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
וְהוּא כְּחָתָן יֹצֵא מֵחֻפָּתוֹ יָשִׂישׂ כְּגִבּוֹר לָרוּץ אֹֽרַח׃
Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς καταβραβευέτω θέλων ἐν ταπεινοφροσύνῃ καὶ θρησκείᾳ τῶν ἀγγέλων ἃ μὴ ἑώρακεν ἐμβατεύων εἰκῇ φυσιούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ νοὸς τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ
Let no man of your reward beguile you in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
וְדִבַּרְתִּי עַל-הַנְּבִיאִים וְאָנֹכִי חָזוֹן הִרְבֵּיתִי וּבְיַד הַנְּבִיאִים אֲדַמֶּֽה׃
I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
