וּבַמִּדְבָּר אֲשֶׁר רָאִיתָ אֲשֶׁר נְשָֽׂאֲךָ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר יִשָּׂא-אִישׁ אֶת-בְּנוֹ בְּכָל-הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר הֲלַכְתֶּם עַד-בֹּֽאֲכֶם עַד-הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
אִם-יִרְאֶה אִישׁ בָּֽאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה הַדּוֹר הָרָע הַזֶּה אֵת הָאָרֶץ הַטּוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי לָתֵת לַאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃
Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,
וַֽתַּעֲנוּ׀ וַתֹּֽאמְרוּ אֵלַי חָטָאנוּ לַֽיהוָה אֲנַחְנוּ נַֽעֲלֶה וְנִלְחַמְנוּ כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר-צִוָּנוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וַֽתַּחְגְּרוּ אִישׁ אֶת-כְּלֵי מִלְחַמְתּוֹ וַתָּהִינוּ לַֽעֲלֹת הָהָֽרָה׃
Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
וְהַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר-הָלַכְנוּ׀ מִקָּדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ עַד אֲשֶׁר-עָבַרְנוּ אֶת-נַחַל זֶרֶד שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁמֹנֶה שָׁנָה עַד-תֹּם כָּל-הַדּוֹר אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה מִקֶּרֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶה כַּֽאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהוָה לָהֶֽם׃
And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.
וַיְהִי כַֽאֲשֶׁר-תַּמּוּ כָּל-אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה לָמוּת מִקֶּרֶב הָעָֽם׃
So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
כִּי רַק-עוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן נִשְׁאַר מִיֶּתֶר הָֽרְפָאִים הִנֵּה עַרְשׂוֹ עֶרֶשׂ בַּרְזֶל הֲלֹה הִוא בְּרַבַּת בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן תֵּשַׁע אַמּוֹת אָרְכָּהּ וְאַרְבַּע אַמּוֹת רָחְבָּהּ בְּאַמַּת-אִֽישׁ׃
For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.
עַד אֲשֶׁר-יָנִיחַ יְהוָה׀ לַֽאֲחֵיכֶם כָּכֶם וְיָֽרְשׁוּ גַם-הֵם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם נֹתֵן לָהֶם בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן וְשַׁבְתֶּם אִישׁ לִֽירֻשָּׁתוֹ אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לָכֶֽם׃
Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.
עֵֽינֵיכֶם הָֽרֹאוֹת אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה יְהוָה בְּבַעַל פְּעוֹר כִּי כָל-הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הָלַךְ אַֽחֲרֵי בַֽעַל-פְּעוֹר הִשְׁמִידוֹ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
וַֽעֲבַדְתֶּם-שָׁם אֱלֹהִים מַֽעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי אָדָם עֵץ וָאֶבֶן אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יִרְאוּן וְלֹא יִשְׁמְעוּן וְלֹא יֹֽאכְלוּן וְלֹא יְרִיחֻֽן׃
And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
כִּי שְׁאַל-נָא לְיָמִים רִֽאשֹׁנִים אֲשֶׁר-הָיוּ לְפָנֶיךָ לְמִן-הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים׀ אָדָם עַל-הָאָרֶץ וּלְמִקְצֵה הַשָּׁמַיִם וְעַד-קְצֵה הַשָּׁמָיִם הֲנִֽהְיָה כַּדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה אוֹ הֲנִשְׁמַע כָּמֹֽהוּ׃
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
וַתֹּֽאמְרוּ הֵן הֶרְאָנוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֶת-כְּבֹדוֹ וְאֶת-גָּדְלוֹ וְאֶת-קֹלוֹ שָׁמַעְנוּ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה רָאִינוּ כִּֽי-יְדַבֵּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הָֽאָדָם וָחָֽי׃
And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.
וְנָתַן מַלְכֵיהֶם בְּיָדֶךָ וְהַֽאֲבַדְתָּ אֶת-שְׁמָם מִתַּחַת הַשָּׁמָיִם לֹֽא-יִתְיַצֵּב אִישׁ בְּפָנֶיךָ עַד הִשְׁמִֽדְךָ אֹתָֽם׃
And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.
וַֽיְעַנְּךָ וַיַּרְעִבֶךָ וַיַּאֲכִֽלְךָ אֶת-הַמָּן אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יָדַעְתָּ וְלֹא יָֽדְעוּן אֲבֹתֶיךָ לְמַעַן הוֹדִֽיעֲךָ כִּי לֹא עַל-הַלֶּחֶם לְבַדּוֹ יִֽחְיֶה הָֽאָדָם כִּי עַל-כָּל-מוֹצָא פִֽי-יְהוָה יִֽחְיֶה הָֽאָדָֽם׃
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
וְיָֽדַעְתָּ עִם-לְבָבֶךָ כִּי כַּֽאֲשֶׁר יְיַסֵּר אִישׁ אֶת-בְּנוֹ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ מְיַסְּרֶֽךָּ׃
Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.
לֹֽא-יִתְיַצֵּב אִישׁ בִּפְנֵיכֶם פַּחְדְּכֶם וּמֽוֹרַאֲכֶם יִתֵּן׀ יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם עַל-פְּנֵי כָל-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּדְרְכוּ-בָהּ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר לָכֶֽם׃
There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.
לֹא תַֽעֲשׂוּן כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ עֹשִׂים פֹּה הַיּוֹם אִישׁ כָּל-הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינָֽיו׃
Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.
יָֽצְאוּ אֲנָשִׁים בְּנֵֽי-בְלִיַּעַל מִקִּרְבֶּךָ וַיַּדִּיחוּ אֶת-יֹֽשְׁבֵי עִירָם לֵאמֹר נֵֽלְכָה וְנַֽעַבְדָה אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יְדַעְתֶּֽם׃
Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
וְזֶה דְּבַר הַשְּׁמִטָּה שָׁמוֹט כָּל-בַּעַל מַשֵּׁה יָדוֹ אֲשֶׁר יַשֶּׁה בְּרֵעֵהוּ לֹֽא-יִגֹּשׂ אֶת-רֵעֵהוּ וְאֶת-אָחִיו כִּֽי-קָרָא שְׁמִטָּה לַֽיהוָֽה׃
And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD's release.
אִישׁ כְּמַתְּנַת יָדוֹ כְּבִרְכַּת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר נָֽתַן-לָֽךְ׃
Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee.
כִּֽי-יִמָּצֵא בְקִרְבְּךָ בְּאַחַד שְׁעָרֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ אִישׁ אֽוֹ-אִשָּׁה אֲשֶׁר יַֽעֲשֶׂה אֶת-הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָֽה-אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַֽעֲבֹר בְּרִיתֽוֹ׃
If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant,
וְהֽוֹצֵאתָ אֶת-הָאִישׁ הַהוּא אוֹ אֶת-הָֽאִשָּׁה הַהִוא אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ אֶת-הַדָּבָר הָרָע הַזֶּה אֶל-שְׁעָרֶיךָ אֶת-הָאִישׁ אוֹ אֶת-הָֽאִשָּׁה וּסְקַלְתָּם בָּֽאֲבָנִים וָמֵֽתוּ׃
Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.
וְהָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-יַֽעֲשֶׂה בְזָדוֹן לְבִלְתִּי שְׁמֹעַ אֶל-הַכֹּהֵן הָֽעֹמֵד לְשָׁרֶת שָׁם אֶת-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אוֹ אֶל-הַשֹּׁפֵט וּמֵת הָאִישׁ הַהוּא וּבִֽעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
שׂוֹם תָּשִׂים עָלֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר יִבְחַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בּוֹ מִקֶּרֶב אַחֶיךָ תָּשִׂים עָלֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ לֹא תוּכַל לָתֵת עָלֶיךָ אִישׁ נָכְרִי אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-אָחִיךָ הֽוּא׃
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
וְהָיָה הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יִשְׁמַע אֶל-דְּבָרַי אֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר בִּשְׁמִי אָֽנֹכִי אֶדְרֹשׁ מֵֽעִמּֽוֹ׃
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
וְכִֽי-יִהְיֶה אִישׁ שֹׂנֵא לְרֵעֵהוּ וְאָרַב לוֹ וְקָם עָלָיו וְהִכָּהוּ נֶפֶשׁ וָמֵת וְנָס אֶל-אַחַת הֶֽעָרִים הָאֵֽל׃
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
לֹֽא-יָקוּם עֵד אֶחָד בְּאִישׁ לְכָל-עָוֹן וּלְכָל-חַטָּאת בְּכָל-חֵטְא אֲשֶׁר יֶֽחֱטָא עַל-פִּי׀ שְׁנֵי עֵדִים אוֹ עַל-פִּי שְׁלֹשָֽׁה-עֵדִים יָקוּם דָּבָֽר׃
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
כִּֽי-יָקוּם עֵד-חָמָס בְּאִישׁ לַֽעֲנוֹת בּוֹ סָרָֽה׃
If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
וְעָֽמְדוּ שְׁנֵֽי-הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר-לָהֶם הָרִיב לִפְנֵי יְהוָה לִפְנֵי הַכֹּֽהֲנִים וְהַשֹּׁפְטִים אֲשֶׁר יִֽהְיוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵֽם׃
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
וְדִבְּרוּ הַשֹּֽׁטְרִים אֶל-הָעָם לֵאמֹר מִֽי-הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר בָּנָה בַֽיִת-חָדָשׁ וְלֹא חֲנָכוֹ יֵלֵךְ וְיָשֹׁב לְבֵיתוֹ פֶּן-יָמוּת בַּמִּלְחָמָה וְאִישׁ אַחֵר יַחְנְכֶֽנּוּ׃
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
וּמִֽי-הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-נָטַע כֶּרֶם וְלֹא חִלְּלוֹ יֵלֵךְ וְיָשֹׁב לְבֵיתוֹ פֶּן-יָמוּת בַּמִּלְחָמָה וְאִישׁ אַחֵר יְחַלְּלֶֽנּוּ׃
And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
וּמִֽי-הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-אֵרַשׂ אִשָּׁה וְלֹא לְקָחָהּ יֵלֵךְ וְיָשֹׁב לְבֵיתוֹ פֶּן-יָמוּת בַּמִּלְחָמָה וְאִישׁ אַחֵר יִקָּחֶֽנָּה׃
And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
וְיָֽסְפוּ הַשֹּֽׁטְרִים לְדַבֵּר אֶל-הָעָם וְאָֽמְרוּ מִֽי-הָאִישׁ הַיָּרֵא וְרַךְ הַלֵּבָב יֵלֵךְ וְיָשֹׁב לְבֵיתוֹ וְלֹא יִמַּס אֶת-לְבַב אֶחָיו כִּלְבָבֽוֹ׃
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.
כִּֽי-תָצוּר אֶל-עִיר יָמִים רַבִּים לְֽהִלָּחֵם עָלֶיהָ לְתָפְשָׂהּ לֹֽא-תַשְׁחִית אֶת-עֵצָהּ לִנְדֹּחַ עָלָיו גַּרְזֶן כִּי מִמֶּנּוּ תֹאכֵל וְאֹתוֹ לֹא תִכְרֹת כִּי הָֽאָדָם עֵץ הַשָּׂדֶה לָבֹא מִפָּנֶיךָ בַּמָּצֽוֹר׃
When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:
כִּֽי-תִהְיֶיןָ לְאִישׁ שְׁתֵּי נָשִׁים הָֽאַחַת אֲהוּבָה וְהָֽאַחַת שְׂנוּאָה וְיָֽלְדוּ-לוֹ בָנִים הָֽאֲהוּבָה וְהַשְּׂנוּאָה וְהָיָה הַבֵּן הַבְּכֹר לַשְּׂנִיאָֽה׃
If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
כִּֽי-יִהְיֶה לְאִישׁ בֵּן סוֹרֵר וּמוֹרֶה אֵינֶנּוּ שֹׁמֵעַ בְּקוֹל אָבִיו וּבְקוֹל אִמּוֹ וְיִסְּרוּ אֹתוֹ וְלֹא יִשְׁמַע אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃
If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:
וּרְגָמֻהוּ כָּל-אַנְשֵׁי עִירוֹ בָֽאֲבָנִים וָמֵת וּבִֽעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִקִּרְבֶּךָ וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל יִשְׁמְעוּ וְיִרָֽאוּ׃
And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
וְכִֽי-יִהְיֶה בְאִישׁ חֵטְא מִשְׁפַּט-מָוֶת וְהוּמָת וְתָלִיתָ אֹתוֹ עַל-עֵֽץ׃
And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:
לֹֽא-יִהְיֶה כְלִי-גֶבֶר עַל-אִשָּׁה וְלֹֽא-יִלְבַּשׁ גֶּבֶר שִׂמְלַת אִשָּׁה כִּי תֽוֹעֲבַת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ כָּל-עֹשֵׂה אֵֽלֶּה׃
The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.
כִּֽי-יִקַּח אִישׁ אִשָּׁה וּבָא אֵלֶיהָ וּשְׂנֵאָֽהּ׃
If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,
וְאָמַר אֲבִי הַֽנַּעֲרָ אֶל-הַזְּקֵנִים אֶת-בִּתִּי נָתַתִּי לָאִישׁ הַזֶּה לְאִשָּׁה וַיִּשְׂנָאֶֽהָ׃
And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;
וְלָֽקְחוּ זִקְנֵי הָֽעִיר-הַהִוא אֶת-הָאִישׁ וְיִסְּרוּ אֹתֽוֹ׃
And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him;
וְהוֹצִיאוּ אֶת-הַֽנַּעֲרָ אֶל-פֶּתַח בֵּית-אָבִיהָ וּסְקָלוּהָ אַנְשֵׁי עִירָהּ בָּֽאֲבָנִים וָמֵתָה כִּֽי-עָשְׂתָה נְבָלָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לִזְנוֹת בֵּית אָבִיהָ וּבִֽעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃
Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.
כִּֽי-יִמָּצֵא אִישׁ שֹׁכֵב׀ עִם-אִשָּׁה בְעֻֽלַת-בַּעַל וּמֵתוּ גַּם-שְׁנֵיהֶם הָאִישׁ הַשֹּׁכֵב עִם-הָֽאִשָּׁה וְהָֽאִשָּׁה וּבִֽעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.
כִּי יִֽהְיֶה נַֽעֲרָ בְתוּלָה מְאֹֽרָשָׂה לְאִישׁ וּמְצָאָהּ אִישׁ בָּעִיר וְשָׁכַב עִמָּֽהּ׃
If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
וְהֽוֹצֵאתֶם אֶת-שְׁנֵיהֶם אֶל-שַׁעַר׀ הָעִיר הַהִוא וּסְקַלְתֶּם אֹתָם בָּֽאֲבָנִים וָמֵתוּ אֶת-הַֽנַּעֲרָ עַל-דְּבַר אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-צָעֲקָה בָעִיר וְאֶת-הָאִישׁ עַל-דְּבַר אֲשֶׁר-עִנָּה אֶת-אֵשֶׁת רֵעֵהוּ וּבִֽעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃
Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.
וְֽאִם-בַּשָּׂדֶה יִמְצָא הָאִישׁ אֶת-הַֽנַּעֲרָ הַמְאֹרָשָׂה וְהֶחֱזִֽיק-בָּהּ הָאִישׁ וְשָׁכַב עִמָּהּ וּמֵת הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-שָׁכַב עִמָּהּ לְבַדּֽוֹ׃
But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:
וְלַֽנַּעֲרָ לֹֽא-תַעֲשֶׂה דָבָר אֵין לַֽנַּעֲרָ חֵטְא מָוֶת כִּי כַּֽאֲשֶׁר יָקוּם אִישׁ עַל-רֵעֵהוּ וּרְצָחוֹ נֶפֶשׁ כֵּן הַדָּבָר הַזֶּֽה׃
But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
כִּֽי-יִמְצָא אִישׁ נַֽעֲרָ בְתוּלָה אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-אֹרָשָׂה וּתְפָשָׂהּ וְשָׁכַב עִמָּהּ וְנִמְצָֽאוּ׃
If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
וְנָתַן הָאִישׁ הַשֹּׁכֵב עִמָּהּ לַֽאֲבִי הַֽנַּעֲרָ חֲמִשִּׁים כָּסֶף וְלֽוֹ-תִהְיֶה לְאִשָּׁה תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר עִנָּהּ לֹֽא-יוּכַל שַׁלְּחָהּ כָּל-יָמָֽיו׃
Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
לֹֽא-יִקַּח אִישׁ אֶת-אֵשֶׁת אָבִיו וְלֹא יְגַלֶּה כְּנַף אָבִֽיו׃
A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt.
כִּֽי-יִהְיֶה בְךָ אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יִהְיֶה טָהוֹר מִקְּרֵה-לָיְלָה וְיָצָא אֶל-מִחוּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶה לֹא יָבֹא אֶל-תּוֹךְ הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃
If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
כִּֽי-יִקַּח אִישׁ אִשָּׁה וּבְעָלָהּ וְהָיָה אִם-לֹא תִמְצָא-חֵן בְּעֵינָיו כִּי-מָצָא בָהּ עֶרְוַת דָּבָר וְכָתַב לָהּ סֵפֶר כְּרִיתֻת וְנָתַן בְּיָדָהּ וְשִׁלְּחָהּ מִבֵּיתֽוֹ׃
When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
וְיָֽצְאָה מִבֵּיתוֹ וְהָֽלְכָה וְהָֽיְתָה לְאִישׁ-אַחֵֽר׃
And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
וּשְׂנֵאָהּ הָאִישׁ הָאַֽחֲרוֹן וְכָתַב לָהּ סֵפֶר כְּרִיתֻת וְנָתַן בְּיָדָהּ וְשִׁלְּחָהּ מִבֵּיתוֹ אוֹ כִי יָמוּת הָאִישׁ הָאַֽחֲרוֹן אֲשֶׁר-לְקָחָהּ לוֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃
And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
לֹֽא-יוּכַל בַּעְלָהּ הָֽרִאשׁוֹן אֲשֶֽׁר-שִׁלְּחָהּ לָשׁוּב לְקַחְתָּהּ לִֽהְיוֹת לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה אַֽחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר הֻטַּמָּאָה כִּֽי-תוֹעֵבָה הִוא לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וְלֹא תַֽחֲטִיא אֶת-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ נַֽחֲלָֽה׃
Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
כִּֽי-יִקַּח אִישׁ אִשָּׁה חֲדָשָׁה לֹא יֵצֵא בַּצָּבָא וְלֹֽא-יַעֲבֹר עָלָיו לְכָל-דָּבָר נָקִי יִֽהְיֶה לְבֵיתוֹ שָׁנָה אֶחָת וְשִׂמַּח אֶת-אִשְׁתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר-לָקָֽח׃
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
כִּֽי-יִמָּצֵא אִישׁ גֹּנֵב נֶפֶשׁ מֵֽאֶחָיו מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִתְעַמֶּר-בּוֹ וּמְכָרוֹ וּמֵת הַגַּנָּב הַהוּא וּבִֽעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃
If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.
בַּחוּץ תַּֽעֲמֹד וְהָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה נֹשֶׁה בוֹ יוֹצִיא אֵלֶיךָ אֶֽת-הַעֲבוֹט הַחֽוּצָה׃
Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee.
וְאִם-אִישׁ עָנִי הוּא לֹא תִשְׁכַּב בַּֽעֲבֹטֽוֹ׃
And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge:
לֹֽא-יוּמְתוּ אָבוֹת עַל-בָּנִים וּבָנִים לֹֽא-יוּמְתוּ עַל-אָבוֹת אִישׁ בְּחֶטְאוֹ יוּמָֽתוּ׃
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
כִּֽי-יִהְיֶה רִיב בֵּין אֲנָשִׁים וְנִגְּשׁוּ אֶל-הַמִּשְׁפָּט וּשְׁפָטוּם וְהִצְדִּיקוּ אֶת-הַצַּדִּיק וְהִרְשִׁיעוּ אֶת-הָֽרָשָֽׁע׃
If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
כִּֽי-יֵשְׁבוּ אַחִים יַחְדָּו וּמֵת אַחַד מֵהֶם וּבֵן אֵֽין-לוֹ לֹֽא-תִהְיֶה אֵֽשֶׁת-הַמֵּת הַחוּצָה לְאִישׁ זָר יְבָמָהּ יָבֹא עָלֶיהָ וּלְקָחָהּ לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
וְאִם-לֹא יַחְפֹּץ הָאִישׁ לָקַחַת אֶת-יְבִמְתּוֹ וְעָֽלְתָה יְבִמְתּוֹ הַשַּׁעְרָה אֶל-הַזְּקֵנִים וְאָֽמְרָה מֵאֵן יְבָמִי לְהָקִים לְאָחִיו שֵׁם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא אָבָה יַבְּמִֽי׃
And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother.
וְנִגְּשָׁה יְבִמְתּוֹ אֵלָיו לְעֵינֵי הַזְּקֵנִים וְחָֽלְצָה נַֽעֲלוֹ מֵעַל רַגְלוֹ וְיָֽרְקָה בְּפָנָיו וְעָֽנְתָה וְאָמְרָה כָּכָה יֵֽעָשֶׂה לָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יִבְנֶה אֶת-בֵּית אָחִֽיו׃
Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house.
כִּֽי-יִנָּצוּ אֲנָשִׁים יַחְדָּו אִישׁ וְאָחִיו וְקָֽרְבָה אֵשֶׁת הָֽאֶחָד לְהַצִּיל אֶת-אִישָׁהּ מִיַּד מַכֵּהוּ וְשָֽׁלְחָה יָדָהּ וְהֶֽחֱזִיקָה בִּמְבֻשָֽׁיו׃
When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:
וְעָנוּ הַלְוִיִּם וְאָֽמְרוּ אֶל-כָּל-אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל קוֹל רָֽם׃
And the Levites shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice,
אָרוּר הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר יַֽעֲשֶׂה פֶסֶל וּמַסֵּכָה תּֽוֹעֲבַת יְהוָה מַֽעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי חָרָשׁ וְשָׂם בַּסָּתֶר וְעָנוּ כָל-הָעָם וְאָֽמְרוּ אָמֵֽן׃
Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.
אִשָּׁה תְאָרֵשׂ וְאִישׁ אַחֵר (ישגלנה) יִשְׁכָּבֶנָּה בַּיִת תִּבְנֶה וְלֹֽא-תֵשֵׁב בּוֹ כֶּרֶם תִּטַּע וְלֹא תְחַלְּלֶֽנּוּ׃
Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.
הָאִישׁ הָרַךְ בְּךָ וְהֶֽעָנֹג מְאֹד תֵּרַע עֵינוֹ בְאָחִיו וּבְאֵשֶׁת חֵיקוֹ וּבְיֶתֶר בָּנָיו אֲשֶׁר יוֹתִֽיר׃
So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave:
הָֽרַכָּה בְךָ וְהָֽעֲנֻגָּה אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-נִסְּתָה כַף-רַגְלָהּ הַצֵּג עַל-הָאָרֶץ מֵֽהִתְעַנֵּג וּמֵרֹךְ תֵּרַע עֵינָהּ בְּאִישׁ חֵיקָהּ וּבִבְנָהּ וּבְבִתָּֽהּ׃
The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,
אַתֶּם נִצָּבִים הַיּוֹם כֻּלְּכֶם לִפְנֵי יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם רָֽאשֵׁיכֶם שִׁבְטֵיכֶם זִקְנֵיכֶם וְשֹׁטְרֵיכֶם כֹּל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,
פֶּן-יֵשׁ בָּכֶם אִישׁ אוֹ-אִשָּׁה אוֹ מִשְׁפָּחָה אוֹ-שֵׁבֶט אֲשֶׁר לְבָבוֹ פֹנֶה הַיּוֹם מֵעִם יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ לָלֶכֶת לַֽעֲבֹד אֶת-אֱלֹהֵי הַגּוֹיִם הָהֵם פֶּן-יֵשׁ בָּכֶם שֹׁרֶשׁ פֹּרֶה רֹאשׁ וְלַֽעֲנָֽה׃
Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
לֹֽא-יֹאבֶה יְהוָה סְלֹחַֽ לוֹ כִּי אָז יֶעְשַׁן אַף-יְהוָה וְקִנְאָתוֹ בָּאִישׁ הַהוּא וְרָבְצָה בּוֹ כָּל-הָאָלָה הַכְּתוּבָה בַּסֵּפֶר הַזֶּה וּמָחָה יְהוָה אֶת-שְׁמוֹ מִתַּחַת הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.
הַקְהֵל אֶת-הָעָם הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וְהַנָּשִׁים וְהַטַּף וְגֵֽרְךָ אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ לְמַעַן יִשְׁמְעוּ וּלְמַעַן יִלְמְדוּ וְיָֽרְאוּ אֶת-יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם וְשָֽׁמְרוּ לַֽעֲשׂוֹת אֶת-כָּל-דִּבְרֵי הַתּוֹרָה הַזֹּֽאת׃
Gather together, the people men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
בְּהַנְחֵל עֶלְיוֹן גּוֹיִם בְּהַפְרִידוֹ בְּנֵי אָדָם יַצֵּב גְּבֻלֹת עַמִּים לְמִסְפַּר בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
When the most High divided their inheritance, to the nations when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.
מִחוּץ תְּשַׁכֶּל-חֶרֶב וּמֵֽחֲדָרִים אֵימָה גַּם-בָּחוּר גַּם-בְּתוּלָה יוֹנֵק עִם-אִישׁ שֵׂיבָֽה׃
The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.
אָמַרְתִּי אַפְאֵיהֶם אַשְׁבִּיתָה מֵֽאֱנוֹשׁ זִכְרָֽם׃
I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men:
וְזֹאת הַבְּרָכָה אֲשֶׁר בֵּרַךְ מֹשֶׁה אִישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לִפְנֵי מוֹתֽוֹ׃
And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
וּלְלֵוִי אָמַר תֻּמֶּיךָ וְאוּרֶיךָ לְאִישׁ חֲסִידֶךָ אֲשֶׁר נִסִּיתוֹ בְּמַסָּה תְּרִיבֵהוּ עַל-מֵי מְרִיבָֽה׃
And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;
וַיִּקְבֹּר אֹתוֹ בַגַּיְ בְּאֶרֶץ מוֹאָב מוּל בֵּית פְּעוֹר וְלֹֽא-יָדַע אִישׁ אֶת-קְבֻרָתוֹ עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.
לֹֽא-יִתְיַצֵּב אִישׁ לְפָנֶיךָ כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר הָיִיתִי עִם-מֹשֶׁה אֶֽהְיֶה עִמָּךְ לֹא אַרְפְּךָ וְלֹא אֶֽעֶזְבֶֽךָּ׃
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
כָּל-אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-יַמְרֶה אֶת-פִּיךָ וְלֹֽא-יִשְׁמַע אֶת-דְּבָרֶיךָ לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר-תְּצַוֶּנּוּ יוּמָת רַק חֲזַק וֶֽאֱמָֽץ׃
Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוֹשֻׁעַ-בִּן-נוּן מִֽן-הַשִּׁטִּים שְׁנַֽיִם-אֲנָשִׁים מְרַגְּלִים חֶרֶשׁ לֵאמֹר לְכוּ רְאוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ וְאֶת-יְרִיחוֹ וַיֵּלְכוּ וַיָּבֹאוּ בֵּית-אִשָּׁה זוֹנָה וּשְׁמָהּ רָחָב וַיִּשְׁכְּבוּ-שָֽׁמָּה׃
And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
וַיֵּאָמַר לְמֶלֶךְ יְרִיחוֹ לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה אֲנָשִׁים בָּאוּ הֵנָּה הַלַּיְלָה מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַחְפֹּר אֶת-הָאָֽרֶץ׃
And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
וַיִּשְׁלַח מֶלֶךְ יְרִיחוֹ אֶל-רָחָב לֵאמֹר הוֹצִיאִי הָֽאֲנָשִׁים הַבָּאִים אֵלַיִךְ אֲשֶׁר-בָּאוּ לְבֵיתֵךְ כִּי לַחְפֹּר אֶת-כָּל-הָאָרֶץ בָּֽאוּ׃
And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
וַתִּקַּח הָֽאִשָּׁה אֶת-שְׁנֵי הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וַֽתִּצְפְּנוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר׀ כֵּן בָּאוּ אֵלַי הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וְלֹא יָדַעְתִּי מֵאַיִן הֵֽמָּה׃
And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
וַיְהִי הַשַּׁעַר לִסְגּוֹר בַּחֹשֶׁךְ וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁים יָצָאוּ לֹא יָדַעְתִּי אָנָה הָֽלְכוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים רִדְפוּ מַהֵר אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם כִּי תַשִּׂיגֽוּם׃
And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁים רָֽדְפוּ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם דֶּרֶךְ הַיַּרְדֵּן עַל הַֽמַּעְבְּרוֹת וְהַשַּׁעַר סָגָרוּ אַֽחֲרֵי כַּֽאֲשֶׁר יָֽצְאוּ הָרֹֽדְפִים אַֽחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃
And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
וַתֹּאמֶר אֶל-הָאֲנָשִׁים יָדַעְתִּי כִּֽי-נָתַן יְהוָה לָכֶם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ וְכִֽי-נָפְלָה אֵֽימַתְכֶם עָלֵינוּ וְכִי נָמֹגוּ כָּל-יֹֽשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃
And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
וַנִּשְׁמַע וַיִּמַּס לְבָבֵנוּ וְלֹא-קָמָה עוֹד רוּחַ בְּאִישׁ מִפְּנֵיכֶם כִּי יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם הוּא אֱלֹהִים בַּשָּׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל וְעַל-הָאָרֶץ מִתָּֽחַת׃
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ לָהּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים נַפְשֵׁנוּ תַחְתֵּיכֶם לָמוּת אִם לֹא תַגִּידוּ אֶת-דְּבָרֵנוּ זֶה וְהָיָה בְּתֵת-יְהוָה לָנוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ וְעָשִׂינוּ עִמָּךְ חֶסֶד וֶֽאֱמֶֽת׃
And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אֵלֶיהָ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים נְקִיִּם אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְּׁבֻֽעָתֵךְ הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃
And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
וַיָּשֻׁבוּ שְׁנֵי הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וַיֵּֽרְדוּ מֵֽהָהָר וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן-נוּן וַיְסַפְּרוּ-לוֹ אֵת כָּל-הַמֹּֽצְאוֹת אוֹתָֽם׃
So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
וְעַתָּה קְחוּ לָכֶם שְׁנֵי עָשָׂר אִישׁ מִשִּׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ-אֶחָד אִישׁ-אֶחָד לַשָּֽׁבֶט׃
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
קְחוּ לָכֶם מִן-הָעָם שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר אֲנָשִׁים אִישׁ-אֶחָד אִישׁ-אֶחָד מִשָּֽׁבֶט׃
Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
וַיִּקְרָא יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶל-שְׁנֵים הֶֽעָשָׂר אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הֵכִין מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ-אֶחָד אִישׁ-אֶחָד מִשָּֽׁבֶט׃
Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם יְהוֹשֻׁעַ עִבְרוּ לִפְנֵי אֲרוֹן יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם אֶל-תּוֹךְ הַיַּרְדֵּן וְהָרִימוּ לָכֶם אִישׁ אֶבֶן אַחַת עַל-שִׁכְמוֹ לְמִסְפַּר שִׁבְטֵי בְנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
וְזֶה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר-מָל יְהוֹשֻׁעַ כָּל-הָעָם הַיֹּצֵא מִמִּצְרַיִם הַזְּכָרִים כֹּל׀ אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה מֵתוּ בַמִּדְבָּר בַּדֶּרֶךְ בְּצֵאתָם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃
And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
כִּי׀ אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה הָֽלְכוּ בְנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמִּדְבָּר עַד-תֹּם כָּל-הַגּוֹי אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה הַיֹּֽצְאִים מִמִּצְרַיִם אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-שָׁמְעוּ בְּקוֹל יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהוָה לָהֶם לְבִלְתִּי הַרְאוֹתָם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהוָה לַֽאֲבוֹתָם לָתֶת לָנוּ אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָֽשׁ׃
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
וַיְהִי בִּֽהְיוֹת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּֽירִיחוֹ וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה-אִישׁ עֹמֵד לְנֶגְדּוֹ וְחַרְבּוֹ שְׁלוּפָה בְּיָדוֹ וַיֵּלֶךְ יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֵלָיו וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ הֲלָנוּ אַתָּה אִם-לְצָרֵֽינוּ׃
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
