וְסַבֹּתֶם אֶת-הָעִיר כֹּל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה הַקֵּיף אֶת-הָעִיר פַּעַם אֶחָת כֹּה תַֽעֲשֶׂה שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִֽים׃
And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
וְהָיָה בִּמְשֹׁךְ׀ בְּקֶרֶן הַיּוֹבֵל (בשמעכם) כְּשָׁמְעֲכֶם אֶת-קוֹל הַשּׁוֹפָר יָרִיעוּ כָל-הָעָם תְּרוּעָה גְדוֹלָה וְנָפְלָה חוֹמַת הָעִיר תַּחְתֶּיהָ וְעָלוּ הָעָם אִישׁ נֶגְדּֽוֹ׃
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.
וַיָּרַע הָעָם וַֽיִּתְקְעוּ בַּשֹּֽׁפָרוֹת וַיְהִי כִשְׁמֹעַ הָעָם אֶת-קוֹל הַשּׁוֹפָר וַיָּרִיעוּ הָעָם תְּרוּעָה גְדוֹלָה וַתִּפֹּל הַֽחוֹמָה תַּחְתֶּיהָ וַיַּעַל הָעָם הָעִירָה אִישׁ נֶגְדּוֹ וַֽיִּלְכְּדוּ אֶת-הָעִֽיר׃
So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
וַֽיַּחֲרִימוּ אֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר בָּעִיר מֵאִישׁ וְעַד-אִשָּׁה מִנַּעַר וְעַד-זָקֵן וְעַד שׁוֹר וָשֶׂה וַֽחֲמוֹר לְפִי-חָֽרֶב׃
And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
וְלִשְׁנַיִם הָֽאֲנָשִׁים הַֽמְרַגְּלִים אֶת-הָאָרֶץ אָמַר יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֹּאוּ בֵּית-הָֽאִשָּׁה הַזּוֹנָה וְהוֹצִיאוּ מִשָּׁם אֶת-הָֽאִשָּׁה וְאֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר-לָהּ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתֶּם לָֽהּ׃
But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
וַיַּשְׁבַּע יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בָּעֵת הַהִיא לֵאמֹר אָרוּר הָאִישׁ לִפְנֵי יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר יָקוּם וּבָנָה אֶת-הָעִיר הַזֹּאת אֶת-יְרִיחוֹ בִּבְכֹרוֹ יְיַסְּדֶנָּה וּבִצְעִירוֹ יַצִּיב דְּלָתֶֽיהָ׃
And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֲנָשִׁים מִֽירִיחוֹ הָעַי אֲשֶׁר עִם-בֵּית אָוֶן מִקֶּדֶם לְבֵֽית-אֵל וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לֵאמֹר עֲלוּ וְרַגְּלוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ וַֽיַּעֲלוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וַֽיְרַגְּלוּ אֶת-הָעָֽי׃
And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
וַיָּשֻׁבוּ אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אֵלָיו אַל-יַעַל כָּל-הָעָם כְּאַלְפַּיִם אִישׁ אוֹ כִּשְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ יַֽעֲלוּ וְיַכּוּ אֶת-הָעָי אַל-תְּיַגַּע-שָׁמָּה אֶת-כָּל-הָעָם כִּי מְעַט הֵֽמָּה׃
And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
וַיַּֽעֲלוּ מִן-הָעָם שָׁמָּה כִּשְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ וַיָּנֻסוּ לִפְנֵי אַנְשֵׁי הָעָֽי׃
So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
וַיַּכּוּ מֵהֶם אַנְשֵׁי הָעַי כִּשְׁלֹשִׁים וְשִׁשָּׁה אִישׁ וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּם לִפְנֵי הַשַּׁעַר עַד-הַשְּׁבָרִים וַיַּכּוּם בַּמּוֹרָד וַיִּמַּס לְבַב-הָעָם וַיְהִי לְמָֽיִם׃
And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
וְנִקְרַבְתֶּם בַּבֹּקֶר לְשִׁבְטֵיכֶם וְהָיָה הַשֵּׁבֶט אֲשֶׁר-יִלְכְּדֶנּוּ יְהוָה יִקְרַב לַמִּשְׁפָּחוֹת וְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָה אֲשֶֽׁר-יִלְכְּדֶנָּה יְהוָה תִּקְרַב לַבָּתִּים וְהַבַּיִת אֲשֶׁר יִלְכְּדֶנּוּ יְהוָה יִקְרַב לַגְּבָרִֽים׃
In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.
וַיַּקְרֵב אֶת-מִשְׁפַּחַת יְהוּדָה וַיִּלְכֹּד אֵת מִשְׁפַּחַת הַזַּרְחִי וַיַּקְרֵב אֶת-מִשְׁפַּחַת הַזַּרְחִי לַגְּבָרִים וַיִּלָּכֵד זַבְדִּֽי׃
And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
וַיַּקְרֵב אֶת-בֵּיתוֹ לַגְּבָרִים וַיִּלָּכֵד עָכָן בֶּן-כַּרְמִי בֶן-זַבְדִּי בֶּן-זֶרַח לְמַטֵּה יְהוּדָֽה׃
And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
וַיָּקָם יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וְכָל-עַם הַמִּלְחָמָה לַֽעֲלוֹת הָעָי וַיִּבְחַר יְהוֹשֻׁעַ שְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף אִישׁ גִּבּוֹרֵי הַחַיִל וַיִּשְׁלָחֵם לָֽיְלָה׃
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
וַיִּקַּח כַּֽחֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ וַיָּשֶׂם אוֹתָם אֹרֵב בֵּין בֵּֽית-אֵל וּבֵין הָעַי מִיָּם לָעִֽיר׃
And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, city. on the west side of the
וַיְהִי כִּרְאוֹת מֶֽלֶךְ-הָעַי וַֽיְמַהֲרוּ וַיַּשְׁכִּימוּ וַיֵּֽצְאוּ אַנְשֵֽׁי-הָעִיר לִקְרַֽאת-יִשְׂרָאֵל לַֽמִּלְחָמָה הוּא וְכָל-עַמּוֹ לַמּוֹעֵד לִפְנֵי הָֽעֲרָבָה וְהוּא לֹא יָדַע כִּֽי-אֹרֵב לוֹ מֵאַֽחֲרֵי הָעִֽיר׃
And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.
וְלֹֽא-נִשְׁאַר אִישׁ בָּעַי וּבֵית אֵל אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יָצְאוּ אַֽחֲרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּֽעַזְבוּ אֶת-הָעִיר פְּתוּחָה וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ אַֽחֲרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
וַיִּפְנוּ אַנְשֵׁי הָעַי אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם וַיִּרְאוּ וְהִנֵּה עָלָה עֲשַׁן הָעִיר הַשָּׁמַיְמָה וְלֹֽא-הָיָה בָהֶם יָדַיִם לָנוּס הֵנָּה וָהֵנָּה וְהָעָם הַנָּס הַמִּדְבָּר נֶהְפַּךְ אֶל-הָֽרוֹדֵֽף׃
And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
וִֽיהוֹשֻׁעַ וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל רָאוּ כִּֽי-לָכַד הָֽאֹרֵב אֶת-הָעִיר וְכִי עָלָה עֲשַׁן הָעִיר וַיָּשֻׁבוּ וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-אַנְשֵׁי הָעָֽי׃
And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.
וַיְהִי כָל-הַנֹּפְלִים בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא מֵאִישׁ וְעַד-אִשָּׁה שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר אָלֶף כֹּל אַנְשֵׁי הָעָֽי׃
And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
וַיֵּֽלְכוּ אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה הַגִּלְגָּל וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אֵלָיו וְאֶל-אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֶרֶץ רְחוֹקָה בָּאנוּ וְעַתָּה כִּרְתוּ-לָנוּ בְרִֽית׃
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
(ויאמרו) וַיֹּאמֶר אִֽישׁ-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-הַֽחִוִּי אוּלַי בְּקִרְבִּי אַתָּה יוֹשֵׁב וְאֵיךְ (אכרות) אֶֽכְרָת-לְךָ בְרִֽית׃
And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
וַיִּקְחוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים מִצֵּידָם וְאֶת-פִּי יְהוָה לֹא שָׁאָֽלוּ׃
And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
וַיִּֽירְאוּ מְאֹד כִּי עִיר גְּדוֹלָה גִּבְעוֹן כְּאַחַת עָרֵי הַמַּמְלָכָה וְכִי הִיא גְדוֹלָה מִן-הָעַי וְכָל-אֲנָשֶׁיהָ גִּבֹּרִֽים׃
That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ אַנְשֵׁי גִבְעוֹן אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה הַגִּלְגָּלָה לֵאמֹר אַל-תֶּרֶף יָדֶיךָ מֵֽעֲבָדֶיךָ עֲלֵה אֵלֵינוּ מְהֵרָה וְהוֹשִׁיעָה לָּנוּ וְעָזְרֵנוּ כִּי נִקְבְּצוּ אֵלֵינוּ כָּל-מַלְכֵי הָֽאֱמֹרִי יֹֽשְׁבֵי הָהָֽר׃
And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אַל-תִּירָא מֵהֶם כִּי בְיָֽדְךָ נְתַתִּים לֹֽא-יַעֲמֹד אִישׁ מֵהֶם בְּפָנֶֽיךָ׃
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
וְלֹא הָיָה כַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לְפָנָיו וְאַֽחֲרָיו לִשְׁמֹעַ יְהוָה בְּקוֹל אִישׁ כִּי יְהוָה נִלְחָם לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁעַ גֹּלּוּ אֲבָנִים גְּדֹלוֹת אֶל-פִּי הַמְּעָרָה וְהַפְקִידוּ עָלֶיהָ אֲנָשִׁים לְשָׁמְרָֽם׃
And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
וַיָּשֻׁבוּ כָל-הָעָם אֶל-הַמַּֽחֲנֶה אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ מַקֵּדָה בְּשָׁלוֹם לֹֽא-חָרַץ לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְאִישׁ אֶת-לְשֹׁנֽוֹ׃
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
וַיְהִי כְּֽהוֹצִיאָם אֶת-הַמְּלָכִים הָאֵלֶּה אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וַיִּקְרָא יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶל-כָּל-אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-קְצִינֵי אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה הֶהָֽלְכוּא אִתּוֹ קִרְבוּ שִׂימוּ אֶת-רַגְלֵיכֶם עַֽל-צַוְּארֵי הַמְּלָכִים הָאֵלֶּה וַֽיִּקְרְבוּ וַיָּשִׂימוּ אֶת-רַגְלֵיהֶם עַל-צַוְּארֵיהֶֽם׃
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
וְכֹל שְׁלַל הֶֽעָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וְהַבְּהֵמָה בָּֽזְזוּ לָהֶם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל רַק אֶֽת-כָּל-הָאָדָם הִכּוּ לְפִי-חֶרֶב עַד-הִשְׁמִדָם אוֹתָם לֹא הִשְׁאִירוּ כָּל-נְשָׁמָֽה׃
And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
וַיִּגְּשׁוּ בְנֵֽי-יְהוּדָה אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בַּגִּלְגָּל וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו כָּלֵב בֶּן-יְפֻנֶּה הַקְּנִזִּי אַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ אֶֽת-הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר-דִּבֶּר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה אִישׁ-הָֽאֱלֹהִים עַל אֹֽדוֹתַי וְעַל אֹֽדוֹתֶיךָ בְּקָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵֽעַ׃
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
וְשֵׁם חֶבְרוֹן לְפָנִים קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע הָֽאָדָם הַגָּדוֹל בָּֽעֲנָקִים הוּא וְהָאָרֶץ שָֽׁקְטָה מִמִּלְחָמָֽה׃
And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.
וַיְהִי הַגּוֹרָל לְמַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה כִּי-הוּא בְּכוֹר יוֹסֵף לְמָכִיר בְּכוֹר מְנַשֶּׁה אֲבִי הַגִּלְעָד כִּי הוּא הָיָה אִישׁ מִלְחָמָה וַֽיְהִי-לוֹ הַגִּלְעָד וְהַבָּשָֽׁן׃
There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.
הָבוּ לָכֶם שְׁלֹשָׁה אֲנָשִׁים לַשָּׁבֶט וְאֶשְׁלָחֵם וְיָקֻמוּ וְיִֽתְהַלְּכוּ בָאָרֶץ וְיִכְתְּבוּ אוֹתָהּ לְפִי נַֽחֲלָתָם וְיָבֹאוּ אֵלָֽי׃
Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
וַיָּקֻמוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וַיֵּלֵכוּ וַיְצַו יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶת-הַהֹֽלְכִים לִכְתֹּב אֶת-הָאָרֶץ לֵאמֹר לְכוּ וְהִתְהַלְּכוּ בָאָרֶץ וְכִתְבוּ אוֹתָהּ וְשׁוּבוּ אֵלַי וּפֹה אַשְׁלִיךְ לָכֶם גּוֹרָל לִפְנֵי יְהוָה בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you before the LORD in Shiloh.
וַיֵּֽלְכוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ בָאָרֶץ וַיִּכְתְּבוּהָ לֶֽעָרִים לְשִׁבְעָה חֲלָקִים עַל-סֵפֶר וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה שִׁלֹֽה׃
And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Joshua to the host at Shiloh.
וַיָּנַח יְהוָה לָהֶם מִסָּבִיב כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר-נִשְׁבַּע לַֽאֲבוֹתָם וְלֹא-עָמַד אִישׁ בִּפְנֵיהֶם מִכָּל-אֹיְבֵיהֶם אֵת כָּל-אֹיְבֵיהֶם נָתַן יְהוָה בְּיָדָֽם׃
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
וַֽעֲשָׂרָה נְשִׂאִים עִמּוֹ נָשִׂיא אֶחָד נָשִׂיא אֶחָד לְבֵית אָב לְכֹל מַטּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִישׁ רֹאשׁ בֵּית-אֲבוֹתָם הֵמָּה לְאַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
הֲלוֹא׀ עָכָן בֶּן-זֶרַח מָעַל מַעַל בַּחֵרֶם וְעַֽל-כָּל-עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה קָצֶף וְהוּא אִישׁ אֶחָד לֹא גָוַע בַּֽעֲוֹנֽוֹ׃
Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
וַיּוֹרֶשׁ יְהוָה מִפְּנֵיכֶם גּוֹיִם גְּדֹלִים וַֽעֲצוּמִים וְאַתֶּם לֹא-עָמַד אִישׁ בִּפְנֵיכֶם עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
אִישׁ-אֶחָד מִכֶּם יִרְדָּף-אָלֶף כִּי׀ יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם הוּא הַנִּלְחָם לָכֶם כַּֽאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר לָכֶֽם׃
One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
וַתַּֽעַבְרוּ אֶת-הַיַּרְדֵּן וַתָּבֹאוּ אֶל-יְרִיחוֹ וַיִּלָּֽחֲמוּ בָכֶם בַּעֲלֵֽי-יְרִיחוֹ הָֽאֱמֹרִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַֽחִתִּי וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁי הַֽחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי וָֽאֶתֵּן אוֹתָם בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃
And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.
וַיְשַׁלַּח יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶת-הָעָם אִישׁ לְנַֽחֲלָתֽוֹ׃
So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
וַיַּעַל יְהוּדָה וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה אֶת-הַכְּנַֽעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי בְּיָדָם וַיַּכּוּם בְּבֶזֶק עֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִֽישׁ׃
And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
וַיִּרְאוּ הַשֹּׁמְרִים אִישׁ יוֹצֵא מִן-הָעִיר וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ הַרְאֵנוּ נָא אֶת-מְבוֹא הָעִיר וְעָשִׂינוּ עִמְּךָ חָֽסֶד׃
And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
וַיַּרְאֵם אֶת-מְבוֹא הָעִיר וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-הָעִיר לְפִי-חָרֶב וְאֶת-הָאִישׁ וְאֶת-כָּל-מִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ שִׁלֵּֽחוּ׃
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
וַיֵּלֶךְ הָאִישׁ אֶרֶץ הַֽחִתִּים וַיִּבֶן עִיר וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמָהּ לוּז הוּא שְׁמָהּ עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
וַיְשַׁלַּח יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶת-הָעָם וַיֵּֽלְכוּ בְנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ לְנַֽחֲלָתוֹ לָרֶשֶׁת אֶת-הָאָֽרֶץ׃
And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
גַּם-אֲנִי לֹא אוֹסִיף לְהוֹרִישׁ אִישׁ מִפְּנֵיהֶם מִן-הַגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר-עָזַב יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וַיָּמֹֽת׃
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
וַיִּזְעֲקוּ בְנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-יְהוָה וַיָּקֶם יְהוָה לָהֶם מוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת-אֵהוּד בֶּן-גֵּרָא בֶּן-הַיְמִינִי אִישׁ אִטֵּר יַד-יְמִינוֹ וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ בְנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּיָדוֹ מִנְחָה לְעֶגְלוֹן מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָֽב׃
But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
וַיַּקְרֵב אֶת-הַמִּנְחָה לְעֶגְלוֹן מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב וְעֶגְלוֹן אִישׁ בָּרִיא מְאֹֽד׃
And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם רִדְפוּ אַֽחֲרַי כִּֽי-נָתַן יְהוָה אֶת-אֹֽיְבֵיכֶם אֶת-מוֹאָב בְּיֶדְכֶם וַיֵּֽרְדוּ אַֽחֲרָיו וַֽיִּלְכְּדוּ אֶֽת-מַעְבְּרוֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן לְמוֹאָב וְלֹֽא-נָתְנוּ אִישׁ לַֽעֲבֹֽר׃
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-מוֹאָב בָּעֵת הַהִיא כַּֽעֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ כָּל-שָׁמֵן וְכָל-אִישׁ חָיִל וְלֹא נִמְלַט אִֽישׁ׃
And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
וְאַֽחֲרָיו הָיָה שַׁמְגַּר בֶּן-עֲנָת וַיַּךְ אֶת-פְּלִשְׁתִּים שֵֽׁשׁ-מֵאוֹת אִישׁ בְּמַלְמַד הַבָּקָר וַיּוֹשַׁע גַּם-הוּא אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
וַתִּשְׁלַח וַתִּקְרָא לְבָרָק בֶּן-אֲבִינֹעַם מִקֶּדֶשׁ נַפְתָּלִי וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הֲלֹא צִוָּה׀ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵךְ וּמָֽשַׁכְתָּ בְּהַר תָּבוֹר וְלָֽקַחְתָּ עִמְּךָ עֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי נַפְתָּלִי וּמִבְּנֵי זְבֻלֽוּן׃
And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?
וַיַּזְעֵק בָּרָק אֶת-זְבוּלֻן וְאֶת-נַפְתָּלִי קֶדְשָׁה וַיַּעַל בְּרַגְלָיו עֲשֶׂרֶת אַלְפֵי אִישׁ וַתַּעַל עִמּוֹ דְּבוֹרָֽה׃
And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.
וַתֹּאמֶר דְּבֹרָה אֶל-בָּרָק קוּם כִּי זֶה הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר נָתַן יְהוָה אֶת-סִֽיסְרָא בְּיָדֶךָ הֲלֹא יְהוָה יָצָא לְפָנֶיךָ וַיֵּרֶד בָּרָק מֵהַר תָּבוֹר וַֽעֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ אַֽחֲרָֽיו׃
And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ עֲמֹד פֶּתַח הָאֹהֶל וְהָיָה אִם-אִישׁ יָבֹא וּשְׁאֵלֵךְ וְאָמַר הֲיֵֽשׁ-פֹּה אִישׁ וְאָמַרְתְּ אָֽיִן׃
Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.
וְהִנֵּה בָרָק רֹדֵף אֶת-סִֽיסְרָא וַתֵּצֵא יָעֵל לִקְרָאתוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר לוֹ לֵךְ וְאַרְאֶךָּ אֶת-הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-אַתָּה מְבַקֵּשׁ וַיָּבֹא אֵלֶיהָ וְהִנֵּה סִֽיסְרָא נֹפֵל מֵת וְהַיָּתֵד בְּרַקָּתֽוֹ׃
And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples.
הֲלֹא יִמְצְאוּ יְחַלְּקוּ שָׁלָל רַחַם רַֽחֲמָתַיִם לְרֹאשׁ גֶּבֶר שְׁלַל צְבָעִים לְסִיסְרָא שְׁלַל צְבָעִים רִקְמָה צֶבַע רִקְמָתַיִם לְצַוְּארֵי שָׁלָֽל׃
Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?
וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוָה אִישׁ נָבִיא אֶל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם כֹּֽה-אָמַר יְהוָה׀ אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָֽנֹכִי הֶֽעֱלֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם וָֽאֹצִיא אֶתְכֶם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִֽים׃
That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יְהוָה כִּי אֶֽהְיֶה עִמָּךְ וְהִכִּיתָ אֶת-מִדְיָן כְּאִישׁ אֶחָֽד׃
And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
וַיִּקַּח גִּדְעוֹן עֲשָׂרָה אֲנָשִׁים מֵֽעֲבָדָיו וַיַּעַשׂ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֵלָיו יְהוָה וַיְהִי כַּֽאֲשֶׁר יָרֵא אֶת-בֵּית אָבִיו וְאֶת-אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר מֵֽעֲשׂוֹת יוֹמָם וַיַּעַשׂ לָֽיְלָה׃
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
וַיַּשְׁכִּימוּ אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר בַּבֹּקֶר וְהִנֵּה נֻתַּץ מִזְבַּח הַבַּעַל וְהָֽאֲשֵׁרָה אֲשֶׁר-עָלָיו כֹּרָתָה וְאֵת הַפָּר הַשֵּׁנִי הֹֽעֲלָה עַל-הַמִּזְבֵּחַ הַבָּנֽוּי׃
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל-רֵעֵהוּ מִי עָשָׂה הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ וַיְבַקְשׁוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ גִּדְעוֹן בֶּן-יוֹאָשׁ עָשָׂה הַדָּבָר הַזֶּֽה׃
And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר אֶל-יוֹאָשׁ הוֹצֵא אֶת-בִּנְךָ וְיָמֹת כִּי נָתַץ אֶת-מִזְבַּח הַבַּעַל וְכִי כָרַת הָֽאֲשֵׁרָה אֲשֶׁר-עָלָֽיו׃
Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.
וַיְהִי מִסְפַּר הַֽמֲלַקְקִים בְּיָדָם אֶל-פִּיהֶם שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת אִישׁ וְכֹל יֶתֶר הָעָם כָּֽרְעוּ עַל-בִּרְכֵיהֶם לִשְׁתּוֹת מָֽיִם׃
And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-גִּדְעוֹן בִּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת הָאִישׁ הַֽמֲלַקְקִים אוֹשִׁיעַ אֶתְכֶם וְנָֽתַתִּי אֶת-מִדְיָן בְּיָדֶךָ וְכָל-הָעָם יֵֽלְכוּ אִישׁ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃
And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת-צֵדָה הָעָם בְּיָדָם וְאֵת שׁוֹפְרֹֽתֵיהֶם וְאֵת כָּל-אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל שִׁלַּח אִישׁ לְאֹֽהָלָיו וּבִשְׁלֹשׁ-מֵאוֹת הָאִישׁ הֶֽחֱזִיק וּמַֽחֲנֵה מִדְיָן הָיָה לוֹ מִתַּחַת בָּעֵֽמֶק׃
So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
וַיָּבֹא גִדְעוֹן וְהִנֵּה-אִישׁ מְסַפֵּר לְרֵעֵהוּ חֲלוֹם וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּה חֲלוֹם חָלַמְתִּי וְהִנֵּה (צלול) צְלִיל לֶחֶם שְׂעֹרִים מִתְהַפֵּךְ בְּמַֽחֲנֵה מִדְיָן וַיָּבֹא עַד-הָאֹהֶל וַיַּכֵּהוּ וַיִּפֹּל וַיַּֽהַפְכֵהוּ לְמַעְלָה וְנָפַל הָאֹֽהֶל׃
And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
וַיַּעַן רֵעֵהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵין זֹאת בִּלְתִּי אִם-חֶרֶב גִּדְעוֹן בֶּן-יוֹאָשׁ אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל נָתַן הָֽאֱלֹהִים בְּיָדוֹ אֶת-מִדְיָן וְאֶת-כָּל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
וַיַּחַץ אֶת-שְׁלֹשׁ-מֵאוֹת הָאִישׁ שְׁלֹשָׁה רָאשִׁים וַיִּתֵּן שֽׁוֹפָרוֹת בְּיַד-כֻּלָּם וְכַדִּים רֵיקִים וְלַפִּדִים בְּתוֹךְ הַכַּדִּֽים׃
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
וַיָּבֹא גִדְעוֹן וּמֵאָה-אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר-אִתּוֹ בִּקְצֵה הַֽמַּחֲנֶה רֹאשׁ הָֽאַשְׁמֹרֶת הַתִּֽיכוֹנָה אַךְ הָקֵם הֵקִימוּ אֶת-הַשֹּֽׁמְרִים וַֽיִּתְקְעוּ בַּשּׁוֹפָרוֹת וְנָפוֹץ הַכַּדִּים אֲשֶׁר בְּיָדָֽם׃
So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ אִישׁ תַּחְתָּיו סָבִיב לַֽמַּחֲנֶה וַיָּרָץ כָּל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה וַיָּרִיעוּ (ויניסו) וַיָּנֽוּסוּ׃
And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.
וַֽיִּתְקְעוּ שְׁלֹשׁ-מֵאוֹת הַשּֽׁוֹפָרוֹת וַיָּשֶׂם יְהוָה אֵת חֶרֶב אִישׁ בְּרֵעֵהוּ וּבְכָל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה וַיָּנָס הַֽמַּחֲנֶה עַד-בֵּית הַשִּׁטָּה צְֽרֵרָתָה עַד שְׂפַת-אָבֵל מְחוֹלָה עַל-טַבָּֽת׃
And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-shittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
וַיִּצָּעֵק אִֽישׁ-יִשְׂרָאֵל מִנַּפְתָּלִי וּמִן-אָשֵׁר וּמִן-כָּל-מְנַשֶּׁה וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ אַֽחֲרֵי מִדְיָֽן׃
And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
וּמַלְאָכִים שָׁלַח גִּדְעוֹן בְּכָל-הַר אֶפְרַיִם לֵאמֹר רְדוּ לִקְרַאת מִדְיָן וְלִכְדוּ לָהֶם אֶת-הַמַּיִם עַד בֵּית בָּרָה וְאֶת-הַיַּרְדֵּן וַיִּצָּעֵק כָּל-אִישׁ אֶפְרַיִם וַיִּלְכְּדוּ אֶת-הַמַּיִם עַד בֵּית בָּרָה וְאֶת-הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃
And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אֵלָיו אִישׁ אֶפְרַיִם מָֽה-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה עָשִׂיתָ לָּנוּ לְבִלְתִּי קְרֹאות לָנוּ כִּי הָלַכְתָּ לְהִלָּחֵם בְּמִדְיָן וַיְרִיבוּן אִתּוֹ בְּחָזְקָֽה׃
And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
וַיָּבֹא גִדְעוֹן הַיַּרְדֵּנָה עֹבֵר הוּא וּשְׁלֹשׁ-מֵאוֹת הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ עֲיֵפִים וְרֹֽדְפִֽים׃
And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
וַיֹּאמֶר לְאַנְשֵׁי סֻכּוֹת תְּנוּ-נָא כִּכְּרוֹת לֶחֶם לָעָם אֲשֶׁר בְּרַגְלָי כִּֽי-עֲיֵפִים הֵם וְאָֽנֹכִי רֹדֵף אַֽחֲרֵי זֶבַח וְצַלְמֻנָּע מַלְכֵי מִדְיָֽן׃
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
וַיַּעַל מִשָּׁם פְּנוּאֵל וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם כָּזֹאת וַיַּֽעֲנוּ אוֹתוֹ אַנְשֵׁי פְנוּאֵל כַּֽאֲשֶׁר עָנוּ אַנְשֵׁי סֻכּֽוֹת׃
And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
וַיֹּאמֶר גַּם-לְאַנְשֵׁי פְנוּאֵל לֵאמֹר בְּשׁוּבִי בְשָׁלוֹם אֶתֹּץ אֶת-הַמִּגְדָּל הַזֶּֽה׃
And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
וְזֶבַח וְצַלְמֻנָּע בַּקַּרְקֹר וּמַֽחֲנֵיהֶם עִמָּם כַּֽחֲמֵשֶׁת עָשָׂר אֶלֶף כֹּל הַנּוֹתָרִים מִכֹּל מַֽחֲנֵה בְנֵי-קֶדֶם וְהַנֹּפְלִים מֵאָה וְעֶשְׂרִים אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵֽף חָֽרֶב׃
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
וַיִּלְכָּד-נַעַר מֵֽאַנְשֵׁי סֻכּוֹת וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּ וַיִּכְתֹּב אֵלָיו אֶת-שָׂרֵי סֻכּוֹת וְאֶת-זְקֵנֶיהָ שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה אִֽישׁ׃
And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
וַיָּבֹא אֶל-אַנְשֵׁי סֻכּוֹת וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּה זֶבַח וְצַלְמֻנָּע אֲשֶׁר חֵֽרַפְתֶּם אוֹתִי לֵאמֹר הֲכַף זֶבַח וְצַלְמֻנָּע עַתָּה בְּיָדֶךָ כִּי נִתֵּן לַֽאֲנָשֶׁיךָ הַיְּעֵפִים לָֽחֶם׃
And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
וַיִּקַּח אֶת-זִקְנֵי הָעִיר וְאֶת-קוֹצֵי הַמִּדְבָּר וְאֶת-הַֽבַּרְקֳנִים וַיֹּדַע בָּהֶם אֵת אַנְשֵׁי סֻכּֽוֹת׃
And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
וְאֶת-מִגְדַּל פְּנוּאֵל נָתָץ וַֽיַּהֲרֹג אֶת-אַנְשֵׁי הָעִֽיר׃
And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-זֶבַח וְאֶל-צַלְמֻנָּע אֵיפֹה הָֽאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר הֲרַגְתֶּם בְּתָבוֹר וַֽיֹּאמְרוּ כָּמוֹךָ כְמוֹהֶם אֶחָד כְּתֹאַר בְּנֵי הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃
Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
וַיֹּאמֶר זֶבַח וְצַלְמֻנָּע קוּם אַתָּה וּפְגַע-בָּנוּ כִּי כָאִישׁ גְּבֽוּרָתוֹ וַיָּקָם גִּדְעוֹן וַֽיַּהֲרֹג אֶת-זֶבַח וְאֶת-צַלְמֻנָּע וַיִּקַּח אֶת-הַשַּׂהֲרֹנִים אֲשֶׁר בְּצַוְּארֵי גְמַלֵּיהֶֽם׃
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אִֽישׁ-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-גִּדְעוֹן מְשָׁל-בָּנוּ גַּם-אַתָּה גַּם-בִּנְךָ גַּם בֶּן-בְּנֶךָ כִּי הֽוֹשַׁעְתָּנוּ מִיַּד מִדְיָֽן׃
Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם גִּדְעוֹן אֶשְׁאֲלָה מִכֶּם שְׁאֵלָה וּתְנוּ-לִי אִישׁ נֶזֶם שְׁלָלוֹ כִּֽי-נִזְמֵי זָהָב לָהֶם כִּי יִשְׁמְעֵאלִים הֵֽם׃
And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ נָתוֹן נִתֵּן וַֽיִּפְרְשׂוּ אֶת-הַשִּׂמְלָה וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּ שָׁמָּה אִישׁ נֶזֶם שְׁלָלֽוֹ׃
And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
דַּבְּרוּ-נָא בְּאָזְנֵי כָל-בַּֽעֲלֵי שְׁכֶם מַה-טּוֹב לָכֶם הַמְשֹׁל בָּכֶם שִׁבְעִים אִישׁ כֹּל בְּנֵי יְרֻבַּעַל אִם-מְשֹׁל בָּכֶם אִישׁ אֶחָד וּזְכַרְתֶּם כִּֽי-עַצְמֵכֶם וּבְשַׂרְכֶם אָֽנִי׃
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
וַיְדַבְּרוּ אֲחֵֽי-אִמּוֹ עָלָיו בְּאָזְנֵי כָּל-בַּֽעֲלֵי שְׁכֶם אֵת כָּל-הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַיֵּט לִבָּם אַֽחֲרֵי אֲבִימֶלֶךְ כִּי אָֽמְרוּ אָחִינוּ הֽוּא׃
And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
וַיִּתְּנוּ-לוֹ שִׁבְעִים כֶּסֶף מִבֵּית בַּעַל בְּרִית וַיִּשְׂכֹּר בָּהֶם אֲבִימֶלֶךְ אֲנָשִׁים רֵיקִים וּפֹחֲזִים וַיֵּֽלְכוּ אַֽחֲרָֽיו׃
And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
וַיָּבֹא בֵית-אָבִיו עָפְרָתָה וַֽיַּהֲרֹג אֶת-אֶחָיו בְּנֵֽי-יְרֻבַּעַל שִׁבְעִים אִישׁ עַל-אֶבֶן אֶחָת וַיִּוָּתֵר יוֹתָם בֶּן-יְרֻבַּעַל הַקָּטֹן כִּי נֶחְבָּֽא׃
And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
וַיֵּאָסְפוּ כָּל-בַּֽעֲלֵי שְׁכֶם וְכָל-בֵּית מִלּוֹא וַיֵּלְכוּ וַיַּמְלִיכוּ אֶת-אֲבִימֶלֶךְ לְמֶלֶךְ עִם-אֵלוֹן מֻצָּב אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃
And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
וַיַּגִּדוּ לְיוֹתָם וַיֵּלֶךְ וַֽיַּעֲמֹד בְּרֹאשׁ הַר-גְּרִזִים וַיִּשָּׂא קוֹלוֹ וַיִּקְרָא וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם שִׁמְעוּ אֵלַי בַּֽעֲלֵי שְׁכֶם וְיִשְׁמַע אֲלֵיכֶם אֱלֹהִֽים׃
And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם הַזַּיִת הֶֽחֳדַלְתִּי אֶת-דִּשְׁנִי אֲשֶׁר-בִּי יְכַבְּדוּ אֱלֹהִים וַֽאֲנָשִׁים וְהָלַכְתִּי לָנוּעַ עַל-הָֽעֵצִֽים׃
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
