Judges 20

וַֽיִּפְּלוּ מִבִּנְיָמִן שְׁמֹנָֽה-עָשָׂר אֶלֶף אִישׁ אֶת-כָּל-אֵלֶּה אַנְשֵׁי-חָֽיִל׃
44
And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
וַיִּפְנוּ וַיָּנֻסוּ הַמִּדְבָּרָה אֶל-סֶלַע הָֽרִמּוֹן וַיְעֹֽלְלֻהוּ בַּֽמְסִלּוֹת חֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ וַיַּדְבִּיקוּ אַֽחֲרָיו עַד-גִּדְעֹם וַיַּכּוּ מִמֶּנּוּ אַלְפַּיִם אִֽישׁ׃
45
And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
וַיְהִי כָל-הַנֹּפְלִים מִבִּנְיָמִן עֶשְׂרִים וַֽחֲמִשָּׁה אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵֽף חֶרֶב בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא אֶֽת-כָּל-אֵלֶּה אַנְשֵׁי-חָֽיִל׃
46
So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
וַיִּפְנוּ וַיָּנֻסוּ הַמִּדְבָּרָה אֶל-סֶלַע הָֽרִמּוֹן שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת אִישׁ וַיֵּֽשְׁבוּ בְּסֶלַע רִמּוֹן אַרְבָּעָה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃
47
But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
וְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל שָׁבוּ אֶל-בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן וַיַּכּוּם לְפִי-חֶרֶב מֵעִיר מְתֹם עַד-בְּהֵמָה עַד כָּל-הַנִּמְצָא גַּם כָּל-הֶֽעָרִים הַנִּמְצָאוֹת שִׁלְּחוּ בָאֵֽשׁ׃
48
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

Judges 21

וְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל נִשְׁבַּע בַּמִּצְפָּה לֵאמֹר אִישׁ מִמֶּנּוּ לֹֽא-יִתֵּן בִּתּוֹ לְבִנְיָמִן לְאִשָּֽׁה׃
1
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ מִי אֶחָד מִשִּׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-עָלָה אֶל-יְהוָה הַמִּצְפָּה וְהִנֵּה לֹא בָא-אִישׁ אֶל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה מִיָּבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד אֶל-הַקָּהָֽל׃
8
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
וַיִּתְפָּקֵד הָעָם וְהִנֵּה אֵֽין-שָׁם אִישׁ מִיּֽוֹשְׁבֵי יָבֵשׁ גִּלְעָֽד׃
9
For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.
וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ-שָׁם הָֽעֵדָה שְׁנֵים-עָשָׂר אֶלֶף אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי הֶחָיִל וַיְצַוּוּ אוֹתָם לֵאמֹר לְכוּ וְהִכִּיתֶם אֶת-יֽוֹשְׁבֵי יָבֵשׁ גִּלְעָד לְפִי-חֶרֶב וְהַנָּשִׁים וְהַטָּֽף׃
10
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
וַֽיִּמְצְאוּ מִיּֽוֹשְׁבֵי׀ יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת נַֽעֲרָה בְתוּלָה אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יָדְעָה אִישׁ לְמִשְׁכַּב זָכָר וַיָּבִאוּ אוֹתָם אֶל-הַֽמַּחֲנֶה שִׁלֹה אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃
12
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
וּרְאִיתֶם וְהִנֵּה אִם-יֵצְאוּ בְנוֹת-שִׁילוֹ לָחוּל בַּמְּחֹלוֹת וִֽיצָאתֶם מִן-הַכְּרָמִים וַֽחֲטַפְתֶּם לָכֶם אִישׁ אִשְׁתּוֹ מִבְּנוֹת שִׁילוֹ וַֽהֲלַכְתֶּם אֶרֶץ בִּנְיָמִֽן׃
21
And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
וְהָיָה כִּֽי-יָבֹאוּ אֲבוֹתָם אוֹ אֲחֵיהֶם ‫(לרוב)‬ לָרִיב׀ אֵלֵינוּ וְאָמַרְנוּ אֲלֵיהֶם חָנּוּנוּ אוֹתָם כִּי לֹא לָקַחְנוּ אִישׁ אִשְׁתּוֹ בַּמִּלְחָמָה כִּי לֹא אַתֶּם נְתַתֶּם לָהֶם כָּעֵת תֶּאְשָֽׁמוּ׃
22
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
וַיִּתְהַלְּכוּ מִשָּׁם בְּנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּעֵת הַהִיא אִישׁ לְשִׁבְטוֹ וּלְמִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ וַיֵּֽצְאוּ מִשָּׁם אִישׁ לְנַֽחֲלָתֽוֹ׃
24
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם אֵין מֶלֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינָיו יַֽעֲשֶֽׂה׃

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Ruth 1

וַיְהִי בִּימֵי שְׁפֹט הַשֹּֽׁפְטִים וַיְהִי רָעָב בָּאָרֶץ וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ מִבֵּית לֶחֶם יְהוּדָה לָגוּר בִּשְׂדֵי מוֹאָב הוּא וְאִשְׁתּוֹ וּשְׁנֵי בָנָֽיו׃
1
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
וְשֵׁם הָאִישׁ אֱֽלִימֶלֶךְ וְשֵׁם אִשְׁתּוֹ נָֽעֳמִי וְשֵׁם שְׁנֵֽי-בָנָיו׀ מַחְלוֹן וְכִלְיוֹן אֶפְרָתִים מִבֵּית לֶחֶם יְהוּדָה וַיָּבֹאוּ שְׂדֵי-מוֹאָב וַיִּֽהְיוּ-שָֽׁם׃
2
And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
וַיָּמָת אֱלִימֶלֶךְ אִישׁ נָֽעֳמִי וַתִּשָּׁאֵר הִיא וּשְׁנֵי בָנֶֽיהָ׃
3
And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
וַיָּמֻתוּ גַם-שְׁנֵיהֶם מַחְלוֹן וְכִלְיוֹן וַתִּשָּׁאֵר הָֽאִשָּׁה מִשְּׁנֵי יְלָדֶיהָ וּמֵֽאִישָֽׁהּ׃
5
And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
יִתֵּן יְהוָה לָכֶם וּמְצֶאןָ מְנוּחָה אִשָּׁה בֵּית אִישָׁהּ וַתִּשַּׁק לָהֶן וַתִּשֶּׂאנָה קוֹלָן וַתִּבְכֶּֽינָה׃
9
The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
וַתֹּאמֶר נָֽעֳמִי שֹׁבְנָה בְנֹתַי לָמָּה תֵלַכְנָה עִמִּי הַעֽוֹד-לִי בָנִים בְּֽמֵעַי וְהָיוּ לָכֶם לַֽאֲנָשִֽׁים׃
11
And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
שֹׁבְנָה בְנֹתַי לֵכְןָ כִּי זָקַנְתִּי מִֽהְיוֹת לְאִישׁ כִּי אָמַרְתִּי יֶשׁ-לִי תִקְוָה גַּם הָיִיתִי הַלַּיְלָה לְאִישׁ וְגַם יָלַדְתִּי בָנִֽים׃
12
Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
הֲלָהֵן׀ תְּשַׂבֵּרְנָה עַד אֲשֶׁר יִגְדָּלוּ הֲלָהֵן תֵּֽעָגֵנָה לְבִלְתִּי הֱיוֹת לְאִישׁ אַל בְּנֹתַי כִּֽי-מַר-לִי מְאֹד מִכֶּם כִּֽי-יָצְאָה בִי יַד-יְהוָֽה׃
13
Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.

Ruth 2

וּֽלְנָעֳמִי ‫(מידע)‬ מוֹדַע לְאִישָׁהּ אִישׁ גִּבּוֹר חַיִל מִמִּשְׁפַּחַת אֱלִימֶלֶךְ וּשְׁמוֹ בֹּֽעַז׃
1
And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
וַיַּעַן בֹּעַז וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ הֻגֵּד הֻגַּד לִי כֹּל אֲשֶׁר-עָשִׂית אֶת-חֲמוֹתֵךְ אַֽחֲרֵי מוֹת אִישֵׁךְ וַתַּֽעַזְבִי אָבִיךְ וְאִמֵּךְ וְאֶרֶץ מֽוֹלַדְתֵּךְ וַתֵּלְכִי אֶל-עַם אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-יָדַעַתְּ תְּמוֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃
11
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.
וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ חֲמוֹתָהּ אֵיפֹה לִקַּטְתְּ הַיּוֹם וְאָנָה עָשִׂית יְהִי מַכִּירֵךְ בָּרוּךְ וַתַּגֵּד לַֽחֲמוֹתָהּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָֽשְׂתָה עִמּוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר שֵׁם הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי עִמּוֹ הַיּוֹם בֹּֽעַז׃
19
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man's name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
וַתֹּאמֶר נָֽעֳמִי לְכַלָּתָהּ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לַֽיהוָה אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא-עָזַב חַסְדּוֹ אֶת-הַֽחַיִּים וְאֶת-הַמֵּתִים וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ נָֽעֳמִי קָרוֹב לָנוּ הָאִישׁ מִֽגֹּאֲלֵנוּ הֽוּא׃
20
And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.

Ruth 3

וְרָחַצְתְּ׀ וָסַכְתְּ וְשַׂמְתְּ ‫(שמלתך)‬ שִׂמְלֹתַיִךְ עָלַיִךְ ‫(וירדתי)‬ וְיָרַדְתְּ הַגֹּרֶן אַל-תִּוָּֽדְעִי לָאִישׁ עַד כַּלֹּתוֹ לֶֽאֱכֹל וְלִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃
3
Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
וַֽיְהִי בַּֽחֲצִי הַלַּיְלָה וַיֶּֽחֱרַד הָאִישׁ וַיִּלָּפֵת וְהִנֵּה אִשָּׁה שֹׁכֶבֶת מַרְגְּלֹתָֽיו׃
8
And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
וַתִּשְׁכַּב ‫(מרגלתו)‬ מַרְגְּלוֹתָיוֹ עַד-הַבֹּקֶר וַתָּקָם ‫(בטרום)‬ בְּטֶרֶם יַכִּיר אִישׁ אֶת-רֵעֵהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אַל-יִוָּדַע כִּי-בָאָה הָֽאִשָּׁה הַגֹּֽרֶן׃
14
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
וַתָּבוֹא אֶל-חֲמוֹתָהּ וַתֹּאמֶר מִי-אַתְּ בִּתִּי וַתַּגֶּד-לָהּ אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עָֽשָׂה-לָהּ הָאִֽישׁ׃
16
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
וַתֹּאמֶר שְׁבִי בִתִּי עַד אֲשֶׁר תֵּֽדְעִין אֵיךְ יִפֹּל דָּבָר כִּי לֹא יִשְׁקֹט הָאִישׁ כִּֽי-אִם-כִּלָּה הַדָּבָר הַיּֽוֹם׃
18
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

Ruth 4

וַיִּקַּח עֲשָׂרָה אֲנָשִׁים מִזִּקְנֵי הָעִיר וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁבוּ-פֹה וַיֵּשֵֽׁבוּ׃

And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.
וְזֹאת לְפָנִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל עַל-הַגְּאֻלָּה וְעַל-הַתְּמוּרָה לְקַיֵּם כָּל-דָּבָר שָׁלַף אִישׁ נַֽעֲלוֹ וְנָתַן לְרֵעֵהוּ וְזֹאת הַתְּעוּדָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.

1 Samuel 1

וַיְהִי אִישׁ אֶחָד מִן-הָרָֽמָתַיִם צוֹפִים מֵהַר אֶפְרָיִם וּשְׁמוֹ אֶלְקָנָה בֶּן-יְרֹחָם בֶּן-אֱלִיהוּא בֶּן-תֹּחוּ בֶן-צוּף אֶפְרָתִֽי׃
1
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
וְעָלָה הָאִישׁ הַהוּא מֵֽעִירוֹ מִיָּמִים׀ יָמִימָה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֹת וְלִזְבֹּחַ לַֽיהוָה צְבָאוֹת בְּשִׁלֹה וְשָׁם שְׁנֵי בְנֵֽי-עֵלִי חָפְנִי וּפִנְחָס כֹּֽהֲנִים לַֽיהוָֽה׃

And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ אֶלְקָנָה אִישָׁהּ חַנָּה לָמֶה תִבְכִּי וְלָמֶה לֹא תֹֽאכְלִי וְלָמֶה יֵרַע לְבָבֵךְ הֲלוֹא אָֽנֹכִי טוֹב לָךְ מֵֽעֲשָׂרָה בָּנִֽים׃
8
Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
וַתִּדֹּר נֶדֶר וַתֹּאמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת אִם-רָאֹה תִרְאֶה׀ בָּֽעֳנִי אֲמָתֶךָ וּזְכַרְתַּנִי וְלֹֽא-תִשְׁכַּח אֶת-אֲמָתֶךָ וְנָֽתַתָּה לַאֲמָֽתְךָ זֶרַע אֲנָשִׁים וּנְתַתִּיו לַֽיהוָה כָּל-יְמֵי חַיָּיו וּמוֹרָה לֹֽא-יַעֲלֶה עַל-רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃
11
And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
וַיַּעַל הָאִישׁ אֶלְקָנָה וְכָל-בֵּיתוֹ לִזְבֹּחַ לַֽיהוָה אֶת-זֶבַח הַיָּמִים וְאֶת-נִדְרֽוֹ׃

And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
וְחַנָּה לֹא עָלָתָה כִּֽי-אָמְרָה לְאִישָׁהּ עַד יִגָּמֵל הַנַּעַר וַהֲבִֽאֹתִיו וְנִרְאָה אֶת-פְּנֵי יְהוָה וְיָשַׁב שָׁם עַד-עוֹלָֽם׃
22
But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ אֶלְקָנָה אִישָׁהּ עֲשִׂי הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינַיִךְ שְׁבִי עַד-גָּמְלֵךְ אֹתוֹ אַךְ יָקֵם יְהוָה אֶת-דְּבָרוֹ וַתֵּשֶׁב הָֽאִשָּׁה וַתֵּינֶק אֶת-בְּנָהּ עַד-גָמְלָהּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

1 Samuel 2

רַגְלֵי ‫(חסידו)‬ חֲסִידָיו יִשְׁמֹר וּרְשָׁעִים בַּחֹשֶׁךְ יִדָּמּוּ כִּי-לֹא בְכֹחַ יִגְבַּר-אִֽישׁ׃
9
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
וּמִשְׁפַּט הַכֹּֽהֲנִים אֶת-הָעָם כָּל-אִישׁ זֹבֵחַ זֶבַח וּבָא נַעַר הַכֹּהֵן כְּבַשֵּׁל הַבָּשָׂר וְהַמַּזְלֵג שְׁלֹשׁ הַשִּׁנַּיִם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

And the priests' custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
גַּם בְּטֶרֶם יַקְטִרוּן אֶת-הַחֵלֶב וּבָא׀ נַעַר הַכֹּהֵן וְאָמַר לָאִישׁ הַזֹּבֵחַ תְּנָה בָשָׂר לִצְלוֹת לַכֹּהֵן וְלֹֽא-יִקַּח מִמְּךָ בָּשָׂר מְבֻשָּׁל כִּי אִם-חָֽי׃
15
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הָאִישׁ קַטֵּר יַקְטִירוּן כַּיּוֹם הַחֵלֶב וְקַח-לְךָ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר תְּאַוֶּה נַפְשֶׁךָ וְאָמַר׀ ‫(לו)‬ לֹא כִּי עַתָּה תִתֵּן וְאִם-לֹא לָקַחְתִּי בְחָזְקָֽה׃
16
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
וַתְּהִי חַטַּאת הַנְּעָרִים גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד אֶת-פְּנֵי יְהוָה כִּי נִֽאֲצוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים אֵת מִנְחַת יְהוָֽה׃
17
Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.
וּמְעִיל קָטֹן תַּֽעֲשֶׂה-לּוֹ אִמּוֹ וְהַֽעַלְתָה לוֹ מִיָּמִים׀ יָמִימָה בַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ אֶת-אִישָׁהּ לִזְבֹּחַ אֶת-זֶבַח הַיָּמִֽים׃
19
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
אִם-יֶֽחֱטָא אִישׁ לְאִישׁ וּפִֽלְלוֹ אֱלֹהִים וְאִם לַֽיהוָה יֶֽחֱטָא-אִישׁ מִי יִתְפַּלֶּל-לוֹ וְלֹא יִשְׁמְעוּ לְקוֹל אֲבִיהֶם כִּֽי-חָפֵץ יְהוָה לַֽהֲמִיתָֽם׃
25
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.
וְהַנַּעַר שְׁמוּאֵל הֹלֵךְ וְגָדֵל וָטוֹב גַּם עִם-יְהוָה וְגַם עִם-אֲנָשִֽׁים׃

And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.
וַיָּבֹא אִישׁ-אֱלֹהִים אֶל-עֵלִי וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה הֲנִגְלֹה נִגְלֵיתִי אֶל-בֵּית אָבִיךָ בִּֽהְיוֹתָם בְּמִצְרַיִם לְבֵית פַּרְעֹֽה׃
27
And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?
וְאִישׁ לֹֽא-אַכְרִית לְךָ מֵעִם מִזְבְּחִי לְכַלּוֹת אֶת-עֵינֶיךָ וְלַֽאֲדִיב אֶת-נַפְשֶׁךָ וְכָל-מַרְבִּית בֵּֽיתְךָ יָמוּתוּ אֲנָשִֽׁים׃
33
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.

1 Samuel 4

וַיַּֽעַרְכוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים לִקְרַאת יִשְׂרָאֵל וַתִּטֹּשׁ הַמִּלְחָמָה וַיִּנָּגֶף יִשְׂרָאֵל לִפְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיַּכּוּ בַמַּֽעֲרָכָה בַּשָּׂדֶה כְּאַרְבַּעַת אֲלָפִים אִֽישׁ׃

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
הִֽתְחַזְּקוּ וִֽהְיוּ לַֽאֲנָשִׁים פְּלִשְׁתִּים פֶּן תַּֽעַבְדוּ לָֽעִבְרִים כַּֽאֲשֶׁר עָֽבְדוּ לָכֶם וִֽהְיִיתֶם לַֽאֲנָשִׁים וְנִלְחַמְתֶּֽם׃
9
Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
וַיִּלָּֽחֲמוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיִּנָּגֶף יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּנֻסוּ אִישׁ לְאֹֽהָלָיו וַתְּהִי הַמַּכָּה גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד וַיִּפֹּל מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל שְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף רַגְלִֽי׃

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
וַיָּרָץ אִישׁ-בִּנְיָמִן מֵהַמַּעֲרָכָה וַיָּבֹא שִׁלֹה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא וּמַדָּיו קְרֻעִים וַֽאֲדָמָה עַל-רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃
12
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
וַיָּבוֹא וְהִנֵּה עֵלִי יֹשֵׁב עַֽל-הַכִּסֵּא ‫(יך)‬ יַד דֶּרֶךְ מְצַפֶּה כִּֽי-הָיָה לִבּוֹ חָרֵד עַל אֲרוֹן הָֽאֱלֹהִים וְהָאִישׁ בָּא לְהַגִּיד בָּעִיר וַתִּזְעַק כָּל-הָעִֽיר׃
13
And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
וַיִּשְׁמַע עֵלִי אֶת-קוֹל הַצְּעָקָה וַיֹּאמֶר מֶה קוֹל הֶֽהָמוֹן הַזֶּה וְהָאִישׁ מִהַר וַיָּבֹא וַיַּגֵּד לְעֵלִֽי׃
14
And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
וַיֹּאמֶר הָאִישׁ אֶל-עֵלִי אָֽנֹכִי הַבָּא מִן-הַמַּֽעֲרָכָה וַֽאֲנִי מִן-הַמַּֽעֲרָכָה נַסְתִּי הַיּוֹם וַיֹּאמֶר מֶֽה-הָיָה הַדָּבָר בְּנִֽי׃
16
And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
וַיְהִי כְּהַזְכִּירוֹ׀ אֶת-אֲרוֹן הָֽאֱלֹהִים וַיִּפֹּל מֵֽעַל-הַכִּסֵּא אֲחֹרַנִּית בְּעַד׀ יַד הַשַּׁעַר וַתִּשָּׁבֵר מַפְרַקְתּוֹ וַיָּמֹת כִּֽי-זָקֵן הָאִישׁ וְכָבֵד וְהוּא שָׁפַט אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָֽה׃
18
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
וְכַלָּתוֹ אֵשֶׁת-פִּֽינְחָס הָרָה לָלַת וַתִּשְׁמַע אֶת-הַשְּׁמוּעָה אֶל-הִלָּקַח אֲרוֹן הָֽאֱלֹהִים וּמֵת חָמִיהָ וְאִישָׁהּ וַתִּכְרַע וַתֵּלֶד כִּֽי-נֶהֶפְכוּ עָלֶיהָ צִרֶֽיהָ׃
19
And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
וַתִּקְרָא לַנַּעַר אִֽי-כָבוֹד לֵאמֹר גָּלָה כָבוֹד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-הִלָּקַח אֲרוֹן הָֽאֱלֹהִים וְאֶל-חָמִיהָ וְאִישָֽׁהּ׃
21
And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

1 Samuel 5

וַיִּרְאוּ אַנְשֵֽׁי-אַשְׁדּוֹד כִּֽי-כֵן וְאָֽמְרוּ לֹֽא-יֵשֵׁב אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עִמָּנוּ כִּֽי-קָשְׁתָה יָדוֹ עָלֵינוּ וְעַל דָּגוֹן אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃
7
And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
וַיְהִי אַֽחֲרֵי׀ הֵסַבּוּ אֹתוֹ וַתְּהִי יַד-יְהוָה׀ בָּעִיר מְהוּמָה גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד וַיַּךְ אֶת-אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר מִקָּטֹן וְעַד-גָּדוֹל וַיִּשָּֽׂתְרוּ לָהֶם ‫(עפלים)‬ טְחֹרִֽים׃

And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לֹא-מֵתוּ הֻכּוּ ‫(בעפלים)‬ בַּטְּחֹרִים וַתַּעַל שַֽׁוְעַת הָעִיר הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

1 Samuel 6

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים כֵּן וַיִּקְחוּ שְׁתֵּי פָרוֹת עָלוֹת וַיַּֽאַסְרוּם בָּֽעֲגָלָה וְאֶת-בְּנֵיהֶם כָּלוּ בַבָּֽיִת׃
10
And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
וְהַלְוִיִּם הוֹרִידוּ׀ אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָה וְאֶת-הָֽאַרְגַּז אֲשֶׁר-אִתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר-בּוֹ כְלֵֽי-זָהָב וַיָּשִׂמוּ אֶל-הָאֶבֶן הַגְּדוֹלָה וְאַנְשֵׁי בֵֽית-שֶׁמֶשׁ הֶֽעֱלוּ עֹלוֹת וַֽיִּזְבְּחוּ זְבָחִים בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לַֽיהוָֽה׃

And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
וַיַּךְ בְּאַנְשֵׁי בֵֽית-שֶׁמֶשׁ כִּי רָאוּ בַּֽאֲרוֹן יְהוָה וַיַּךְ בָּעָם שִׁבְעִים אִישׁ חֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף אִישׁ וַיִּֽתְאַבְּלוּ הָעָם כִּֽי-הִכָּה יְהוָה בָּעָם מַכָּה גְדוֹלָֽה׃
19
And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי בֵֽית-שֶׁמֶשׁ מִי יוּכַל לַֽעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי יְהוָה הָֽאֱלֹהִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה וְאֶל-מִי יַֽעֲלֶה מֵֽעָלֵֽינוּ׃
20
And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

1 Samuel 7

וַיָּבֹאוּ אַנְשֵׁי׀ קִרְיַת יְעָרִים וַֽיַּעֲלוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָה וַיָּבִאוּ אֹתוֹ אֶל-בֵּית אֲבִֽינָדָב בַּגִּבְעָה וְאֶת-אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ קִדְּשׁוּ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָֽה׃
1
And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
וַיֵּצְאוּ אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן-הַמִּצְפָּה וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ אֶת-פְּלִשְׁתִּים וַיַּכּוּם עַד-מִתַּחַת לְבֵית כָּֽר׃
11
And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.

1 Samuel 8

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל שְׁמַע בְּקוֹלָם וְהִמְלַכְתָּ לָהֶם מֶלֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְכוּ אִישׁ לְעִירֽוֹ׃

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

1 Samuel 9

וַיְהִי-אִישׁ ‫(מבן)‬ ‫(ימין)‬ מִבִּנְיָמִין וּשְׁמוֹ קִישׁ בֶּן-אֲבִיאֵל בֶּן-צְרוֹר בֶּן-בְּכוֹרַת בֶּן-אֲפִיחַ בֶּן-אִישׁ יְמִינִי גִּבּוֹר חָֽיִל׃
1
Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.
וְלֽוֹ-הָיָה בֵן וּשְׁמוֹ שָׁאוּל בָּחוּר וָטוֹב וְאֵין אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל טוֹב מִמֶּנּוּ מִשִּׁכְמוֹ וָמַעְלָה גָּבֹהַּ מִכָּל-הָעָֽם׃
2
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ הִנֵּה-נָא אִישׁ-אֱלֹהִים בָּעִיר הַזֹּאת וְהָאִישׁ נִכְבָּד כֹּל אֲשֶׁר-יְדַבֵּר בּוֹא יָבוֹא עַתָּה נֵלֲכָה שָּׁם אוּלַי יַגִּיד לָנוּ אֶת-דַּרְכֵּנוּ אֲשֶׁר-הָלַכְנוּ עָלֶֽיהָ׃
6
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל לְנַֽעֲרוֹ וְהִנֵּה נֵלֵךְ וּמַה-נָּבִיא לָאִישׁ כִּי הַלֶּחֶם אָזַל מִכֵּלֵינוּ וּתְשׁוּרָה אֵין-לְהָבִיא לְאִישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים מָה אִתָּֽנוּ׃
7
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
וַיֹּסֶף הַנַּעַר לַֽעֲנוֹת אֶת-שָׁאוּל וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּה נִמְצָא בְיָדִי רֶבַע שֶׁקֶל כָּסֶף וְנָֽתַתִּי לְאִישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים וְהִגִּיד לָנוּ אֶת-דַּרְכֵּֽנוּ׃
8
And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
לְפָנִים׀ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כֹּֽה-אָמַר הָאִישׁ בְּלֶכְתּוֹ לִדְרוֹשׁ אֱלֹהִים לְכוּ וְנֵֽלְכָה עַד-הָֽרֹאֶה כִּי לַנָּבִיא הַיּוֹם יִקָּרֵא לְפָנִים הָֽרֹאֶֽה׃
9
(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל לְנַֽעֲרוֹ טוֹב דְּבָֽרְךָ לְכָה׀ נֵלֵכָה וַיֵּֽלְכוּ אֶל-הָעִיר אֲשֶׁר-שָׁם אִישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃
10
Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
כָּעֵת׀ מָחָר אֶשְׁלַח אֵלֶיךָ אִישׁ מֵאֶרֶץ בִּנְיָמִן וּמְשַׁחְתּוֹ לְנָגִיד עַל-עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת-עַמִּי מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים כִּי רָאִיתִי אֶת-עַמִּי כִּי בָּאָה צַֽעֲקָתוֹ אֵלָֽי׃
16
To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
וּשְׁמוּאֵל רָאָה אֶת-שָׁאוּל וַֽיהוָה עָנָהוּ הִנֵּה הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אָמַרְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ זֶה יַעְצֹר בְּעַמִּֽי׃
17
And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
וַיִּקַּח שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת-שָׁאוּל וְאֶֽת-נַעֲרוֹ וַיְבִיאֵם לִשְׁכָּתָה וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם מָקוֹם בְּרֹאשׁ הַקְּרוּאִים וְהֵמָּה כִּשְׁלֹשִׁם אִֽישׁ׃

And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.

1 Samuel 10

בְּלֶכְתְּךָ הַיּוֹם מֵֽעִמָּדִי וּמָצָאתָ שְׁנֵי אֲנָשִׁים עִם-קְבֻרַת רָחֵל בִּגְבוּל בִּנְיָמִן בְּצֶלְצַח וְאָֽמְרוּ אֵלֶיךָ נִמְצְאוּ הָֽאֲתֹנוֹת אֲשֶׁר הָלַכְתָּ לְבַקֵּשׁ וְהִנֵּה נָטַשׁ אָבִיךָ אֶת-דִּבְרֵי הָֽאֲתֹנוֹת וְדָאַג לָכֶם לֵאמֹר מָה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה לִבְנִֽי׃

When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
וְחָֽלַפְתָּ מִשָּׁם וָהָלְאָה וּבָאתָ עַד-אֵלוֹן תָּבוֹר וּמְצָאוּךָ שָּׁם שְׁלֹשָׁה אֲנָשִׁים עֹלִים אֶל-הָֽאֱלֹהִים בֵּֽית-אֵל אֶחָד נֹשֵׂא׀ שְׁלֹשָׁה גְדָיִים וְאֶחָד נֹשֵׂא שְׁלֹשֶׁת כִּכְּרוֹת לֶחֶם וְאֶחָד נֹשֵׂא נֵֽבֶל-יָֽיִן׃

Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
וְצָֽלְחָה עָלֶיךָ רוּחַ יְהוָה וְהִתְנַבִּיתָ עִמָּם וְנֶהְפַּכְתָּ לְאִישׁ אַחֵֽר׃
6
And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
וַיְהִי כָּל-יֽוֹדְעוֹ מֵֽאִתְּמוֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם וַיִּרְאוּ וְהִנֵּה עִם-נְבִאִים נִבָּא וַיֹּאמֶר הָעָם אִישׁ אֶל-רֵעֵהוּ מַה-זֶּה הָיָה לְבֶן-קִישׁ הֲגַם שָׁאוּל בַּנְּבִיאִֽים׃

And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
וַיַּעַן אִישׁ מִשָּׁם וַיֹּאמֶר וּמִי אֲבִיהֶם עַל-כֵּן הָֽיְתָה לְמָשָׁל הֲגַם שָׁאוּל בַּנְּבִאִֽים׃
12
And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ-עוֹד בַּֽיהוָה הֲבָא עוֹד הֲלֹם אִישׁ וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה הִנֵּה-הוּא נֶחְבָּא אֶל-הַכֵּלִֽים׃

Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.
וַיְדַבֵּר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-הָעָם אֵת מִשְׁפַּט הַמְּלֻכָה וַיִּכְתֹּב בַּסֵּפֶר וַיַּנַּח לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיְשַׁלַּח שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת-כָּל-הָעָם אִישׁ לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃

Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

1 Samuel 11

וַיַּעַל נָחָשׁ הָֽעַמּוֹנִי וַיִּחַן עַל-יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד וַיֹּאמְרוּ כָּל-אַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ אֶל-נָחָשׁ כְּרָת-לָנוּ בְרִית וְנַֽעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃
1
Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
וְהִנֵּה שָׁאוּל בָּא אַֽחֲרֵי הַבָּקָר מִן-הַשָּׂדֶה וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל מַה-לָּעָם כִּי יִבְכּוּ וַיְסַפְּרוּ-לוֹ אֶת-דִּבְרֵי אַנְשֵׁי יָבֵֽישׁ׃

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
וַיִּקַּח צֶמֶד בָּקָר וַֽיְנַתְּחֵהוּ וַיְשַׁלַּח בְּכָל-גְּבוּל יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּיַד הַמַּלְאָכִים׀ לֵאמֹר אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ יֹצֵא אַֽחֲרֵי שָׁאוּל וְאַחַר שְׁמוּאֵל כֹּה יֵֽעָשֶׂה לִבְקָרוֹ וַיִּפֹּל פַּֽחַד-יְהוָה עַל-הָעָם וַיֵּֽצְאוּ כְּאִישׁ אֶחָֽד׃

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
וַֽיִּפְקְדֵם בְּבָזֶק וַיִּֽהְיוּ בְנֵֽי-יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וְאִישׁ יְהוּדָה שְׁלֹשִׁים אָֽלֶף׃
8
And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ לַמַּלְאָכִים הַבָּאִים כֹּה תֹֽאמְרוּן לְאִישׁ יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד מָחָר תִּֽהְיֶֽה-לָכֶם תְּשׁוּעָה ‫(בחם)‬ כְּחֹם הַשָּׁמֶשׁ וַיָּבֹאוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים וַיַּגִּידוּ לְאַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ וַיִּשְׂמָֽחוּ׃

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
וַֽיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ מָחָר נֵצֵא אֲלֵיכֶם וַֽעֲשִׂיתֶם לָּנוּ כְּכָל-הַטּוֹב בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶֽם׃

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
וַיֹּאמֶר הָעָם אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל מִי הָֽאֹמֵר שָׁאוּל יִמְלֹךְ עָלֵינוּ תְּנוּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים וּנְמִיתֵֽם׃

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל לֹֽא-יוּמַת אִישׁ בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה כִּי הַיּוֹם עָשָֽׂה-יְהוָה תְּשׁוּעָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
13
And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
וַיֵּֽלְכוּ כָל-הָעָם הַגִּלְגָּל וַיַּמְלִכוּ שָׁם אֶת-שָׁאוּל לִפְנֵי יְהוָה בַּגִּלְגָּל וַיִּזְבְּחוּ-שָׁם זְבָחִים שְׁלָמִים לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיִּשְׂמַח שָׁם שָׁאוּל וְכָל-אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל עַד-מְאֹֽד׃

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

1 Samuel 12

וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא עֲשַׁקְתָּנוּ וְלֹא רַצּוֹתָנוּ וְלֹֽא-לָקַחְתָּ מִיַּד-אִישׁ מְאֽוּמָה׃

And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.

1 Samuel 13

וַיִּבְחַר-לוֹ שָׁאוּל שְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּֽהְיוּ עִם-שָׁאוּל אַלְפַּיִם בְּמִכְמָשׂ וּבְהַר בֵּֽית-אֵל וְאֶלֶף הָיוּ עִם-יוֹנָתָן בְּגִבְעַת בִּנְיָמִין וְיֶתֶר הָעָם שִׁלַּח אִישׁ לְאֹֽהָלָֽיו׃

Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
וְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל רָאוּ כִּי צַר-לוֹ כִּי נִגַּשׂ הָעָם וַיִּֽתְחַבְּאוּ הָעָם בַּמְּעָרוֹת וּבַֽחֲוָחִים וּבַסְּלָעִים וּבַצְּרִחִים וּבַבֹּרֽוֹת׃

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
וְעַתָּה מַמְלַכְתְּךָ לֹֽא-תָקוּם בִּקֵּשׁ יְהוָה לוֹ אִישׁ כִּלְבָבוֹ וַיְצַוֵּהוּ יְהוָה לְנָגִיד עַל-עַמּוֹ כִּי לֹא שָׁמַרְתָּ אֵת אֲשֶֽׁר-צִוְּךָ יְהוָֽה׃
14
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
