Paul's greeting to Philemon
Παῦλος δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφὸς Φιλήμονι τῷ ἀγαπητῷ καὶ συνεργῷ ἡμῶν
Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,
καὶ Ἀπφίᾳ τῇ ἀγαπητῇ καὶ Ἀρχίππῳ τῷ συστρατιώτῃ ἡμῶν καὶ τῇ κατ' οἶκόν σου ἐκκλησίᾳ
And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:
χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ Θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul's thanksgiving for Philemon's love and faith
Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ Θεῷ μου πάντοτε μνείαν σου ποιούμενος ἐπὶ τῶν προσευχῶν μου
I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,
ἀκούων σου τὴν ἀγάπην καὶ τὴν πίστιν ἣν ἔχεις πρὸς τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους
Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
ὅπως ἡ κοινωνία τῆς πίστεώς σου ἐνεργὴς γένηται ἐν ἐπιγνώσει παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ τοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν
That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
χάριν γὰρ ἔχομεν πολλὴν καὶ παράκλησιν ἐπὶ τῇ ἀγάπῃ σου ὅτι τὰ σπλάγχνα τῶν ἁγίων ἀναπέπαυται διὰ σοῦ ἀδελφέ
For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
Paul's appeal for Onesimus
Διὸ πολλὴν ἐν Χριστῷ παῤῥησίαν ἔχων ἐπιτάσσειν σοι τὸ ἀνῆκον
Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,
διὰ τὴν ἀγάπην μᾶλλον παρακαλῶ τοιοῦτος ὢν ὡς Παῦλος πρεσβύτης νυνὶ δὲ καὶ δέσμιος Ἰησοῦ· Χριστοῦ
Yet for sake love's I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου Ὀνήσιμον
I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
τόν ποτέ σοι ἄχρηστον νυνὶ δέ σοι καὶ ἐμοὶ εὔχρηστον
Which was in time past to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
ὃν ἀνέπεμψα· σὺ δὲ αὐτόν τοῦτ' ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα· πρὸσλαβοῦ·
Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:
ὃν ἐγὼ ἐβουλόμην πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν κατέχειν ἵνα ὑπὲρ σοῦ διακονῇ μοι ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
Whom I would have retained with me, that in stead thy he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης οὐδὲν ἠθέλησα ποιῆσαι ἵνα μὴ ὡς κατὰ ἀνάγκην τὸ ἀγαθόν σου ᾖ ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἑκούσιον
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
τάχα γὰρ διὰ τοῦτο ἐχωρίσθη πρὸς ὥραν ἵνα αἰώνιον αὐτὸν ἀπέχῃς
For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον ἀλλ' ὑπὲρ δοῦλον ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν μάλιστα ἐμοί πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλόν σοι καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν Κυρίῳ
Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
Εἰ οὖν ἐμὲ ἔχεις κοινωνόν προσλαβοῦ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐμέ
If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
εἰ δέ τι ἠδίκησέν σε ἢ ὀφείλει τοῦτο ἐμοὶ ἐλλόγει·
If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put account; that on mine
ἐγὼ Παῦλος ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί ἐγὼ ἀποτίσω· ἵνα μὴ λέγω σοι ὅτι καὶ σεαυτόν μοι προσοφείλεις
I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest besides. unto me even thine own self
Ναί ἀδελφέ ἐγώ σου ὀναίμην ἐν Κυρίῳ· ἀνάπαυσόν μου τὰ σπλάγχνα ἐν Κυρίῳ.
Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.
πεποιθὼς τῇ ὑπακοῇ σου ἔγραψά σοι εἰδὼς ὅτι καὶ ὑπὲρ ὃ λέγω ποιήσεις
Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.
Final requests, greetings, and benediction
ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἑτοίμαζέ μοι ξενίαν· ἐλπίζω γὰρ ὅτι διὰ τῶν προσευχῶν ὑμῶν χαρισθήσομαι ὑμῖν
But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
Ἀσπάζονταί σε Ἐπαφρᾶς ὁ συναιχμάλωτός μου ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus;
Μάρκος Ἀρίσταρχος Δημᾶς Λουκᾶς οἱ συνεργοί μου
Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.
Ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν ἀμήν.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
Πρὸς Φιλήμονα ἐγράφη ἀπὸ Ῥώμης διὰ Ὀνησίμου οἰκέτου
