And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ πρός τινας τοὺς πεποιθότας ἐφ' ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι εἰσὶν δίκαιοι καὶ ἐξουθενοῦντας τοὺς λοιποὺς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην·
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐῤῥέθη Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου καὶ μισήσεις τὸν ἐχθρόν σου
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
כְּאֶזְרָח מִכֶּם יִֽהְיֶה לָכֶם הַגֵּר׀ הַגָּר אִתְּכֶם וְאָֽהַבְתָּ לוֹ כָּמוֹךָ כִּֽי-גֵרִים הֱיִיתֶם בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם׃
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
ὅτι δὲ ἐν νόμῳ οὐδεὶς δικαιοῦται παρὰ τῷ θεῷ δῆλον ὅτι Ὁ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται·
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
ἀγνοοῦντες γὰρ τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν δικαιοσύνην ζητοῦντες στῆσαι τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐχ ὑπετάγησαν·
For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not themselves submitted unto the righteousness of God.
τίς οὖν τούτων τῶν τριῶν δοκεῖ σοι πλησίον γεγονέναι τοῦ ἐμπεσόντος εἰς τοὺς λῃστάς
Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
εἰ γὰρ Ἀβραὰμ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη ἔχει καύχημα ἀλλ' οὐ πρὸς τὸν θεόν
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
וַיִּחַר אַף׀ אֱלִיהוּא בֶן-בַּרַכְאֵל הַבּוּזִי מִמִּשְׁפַּחַת רָם בְּאִיּוֹב חָרָה אַפּוֹ עַֽל-צַדְּקוֹ נַפְשׁוֹ מֵאֱלֹהִֽים׃
Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
ὁρᾶτε τοίνυν ὅτι ἐξ ἔργων δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος καὶ οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως μόνον
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
