Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι πορνεῖαι κλοπαί ψευδομαρτυρίαι βλασφημίαι
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
φανερὰ δέ ἐστιν τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός ἅτινά ἐστιν μοιχεία πορνεία ἀκαθαρσία ἀσέλγεια
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
μετανόησον οὖν ἀπὸ τῆς κακίας σου ταύτης καὶ δεήθητι τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰ ἄρα ἀφεθήσεταί σοι ἡ ἐπίνοια τῆς καρδίας σου
Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה וְהָיָה׀ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יַעֲלוּ דְבָרִים עַל-לְבָבֶךָ וְחָשַׁבְתָּ מַחֲשֶׁבֶת רָעָֽה׃
Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
כַּבְּסִי מֵרָעָה לִבֵּךְ יְרוּשָׁלִַם לְמַעַן תִּוָּשֵׁעִי עַד-מָתַי תָּלִין בְּקִרְבֵּךְ מַחְשְׁבוֹת אוֹנֵֽךְ׃
O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
καὶ ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὰς ἐνθυμήσεις αὐτῶν εἶπεν ἵνα τί ὑμεῖς ἐνθυμεῖσθε πονηρὰ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν
And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
καὶ οὐ διεκρίθητε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν
Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
מִֽכָּל-מִשְׁמָר נְצֹר לִבֶּךָ כִּֽי-מִמֶּנּוּ תּוֹצְאוֹת חַיִּֽים׃
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι καθαρίζετε τὸ ἔξωθεν τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τῆς παροψίδος ἔσωθεν δὲ γέμουσιν ἐξ ἁρπαγῆς καὶ ἀκρασίας
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
ἕκαστος δὲ πειράζεται ὑπὸ τῆς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας ἐξελκόμενος καὶ δελεαζόμενος·
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ δικαιοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὁ δὲ θεὸς γινώσκει τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν· ὅτι τὸ ἐν ἀνθρώποις ὑψηλὸν βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν
And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
כֻּלּוֹ סָג יַחְדָּו נֶאֱלָחוּ אֵין עֹֽשֵׂה-טוֹב אֵין גַּם-אֶחָֽד׃
Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
אַף-בְּלֵב עוֹלֹת תִּפְעָלוּן בָּאָרֶץ חֲמַס יְדֵיכֶם תְּפַלֵּֽסֽוּן׃
Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.
רַגְלֵיהֶם לָרַע יָרֻצוּ וִֽימַהֲרוּ לִשְׁפֹּךְ דָּם נָקִי מַחְשְׁבֹֽתֵיהֶם מַחְשְׁבוֹת אָוֶן שֹׁד וָשֶׁבֶר בִּמְסִלּוֹתָֽם׃
Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.
הַכֹּל סָר יַחְדָּו נֶאֱלָחוּ אֵין עֹֽשֵׂה-טוֹב אֵין גַּם-אֶחָֽד׃
They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
וַיָּרַח יְהוָה אֶת-רֵיחַ הַנִּיחֹחַ וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-לִבּוֹ לֹֽא-אֹסִף לְקַלֵּל עוֹד אֶת-הָֽאֲדָמָה בַּֽעֲבוּר הָֽאָדָם כִּי יֵצֶר לֵב הָֽאָדָם רַע מִנְּעֻרָיו וְלֹֽא-אֹסִף עוֹד לְהַכּוֹת אֶת-כָּל-חַי כַּֽאֲשֶׁר עָשִֽׂיתִי׃
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
ἀφορμὴν δὲ λαβοῦσα ἡ ἁμαρτία διὰ τῆς ἐντολῆς κατειργάσατο ἐν ἐμοὶ πᾶσαν ἐπιθυμίαν· χωρὶς γὰρ νόμου ἁμαρτία νεκρά
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
