Cornelius's vision at Caesarea
Ἀνὴρ δέ τις ἦν ἐν Καισαρείᾳ ὀνόματι Κορνήλιος ἑκατοντάρχης ἐκ σπείρης τῆς καλουμένης Ἰταλικῆς
There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
εὐσεβὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν σὺν παντὶ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ ποιῶν τε ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς τῷ λαῷ καὶ δεόμενος τοῦ θεοῦ διαπαντός
A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the to people, and prayed God alway.
εἶδεν ἐν ὁράματι φανερῶς ὡσεὶ ὥραν ἐννάτην τῆς ἡμέρας ἄγγελον τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσελθόντα πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἰπόντα αὐτῷ Κορνήλιε
He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
ὁ δὲ ἀτενίσας αὐτῷ καὶ ἔμφοβος γενόμενος εἶπεν Τί ἐστιν κύριε εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Αἱ προσευχαί σου καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἀνέβησαν εἰς μνημόσυνον ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ
And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
καὶ νῦν πέμψον εἰς Ἰόππην ἄνδρας καὶ μετάπεμψαι Σίμωνά ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται Πέτρος·
And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
οὗτος ξενίζεται παρά τινι Σίμωνι βυρσεῖ ᾧ ἐστιν οἰκία παρὰ θάλασσαν οὗτος λαλήσει σοι τί σε δεῖ ποιεῖν
He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.
ὡς δὲ ἀπῆλθεν ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν τῷ Κορνηλίῳ φωνήσας δύο τῶν οἰκετῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ στρατιώτην εὐσεβῆ τῶν προσκαρτερούντων αὐτῷ
And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that continually; waited on him
καὶ ἐξηγησάμενος αὐτοῖς ἅπαντα ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν Ἰόππην
And when he had declared all things these unto them, he sent them to Joppa.
Peter's vision of the sheet of animals
Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ὁδοιπορούντων ἐκείνων καὶ τῇ πόλει ἐγγιζόντων ἀνέβη Πέτρος ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα προσεύξασθαι περὶ ὥραν ἕκτην
On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
ἐγένετο δὲ πρόσπεινος καὶ ἤθελεν γεύσασθαι παρασκευαζόντων δὲ ἐκείνων ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ' αὐτὸν ἔκστασις
And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγμένον καὶ καταβαῖνον ἐπ' αὐτὸν σκεῦός τι ὡς ὀθόνην μεγάλην τέσσαρσιν ἀρχαῖς δεδεμένον καὶ καθιέμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
ἐν ᾧ ὑπῆρχεν πάντα τὰ τετράποδα τῆς γῆς καὶ τὰ θηρία καὶ τὰ ἑρπετὰ καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
καὶ ἐγένετο φωνὴ πρὸς αὐτόν Ἀναστάς Πέτρε θῦσον καὶ φάγε
And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
ὁ δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν Μηδαμῶς κύριε ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἔφαγον πᾶν κοινὸν ἢ ἀκάθαρτον
But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
καὶ φωνὴ πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου πρὸς αὐτόν Ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου
And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call common. not thou
τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τρίς καὶ πάλιν ἀνελήφθη τὸ σκεῦος εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν
This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
Peter goes with Cornelius's messengers
Ὡς δὲ ἐν ἑαυτῷ διηπόρει ὁ Πέτρος τί ἂν εἴη τὸ ὅραμα ὃ εἶδεν καὶ ἰδού οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἀπὸ τοῦ Κορνηλίου διερωτήσαντες τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος ἐπέστησαν ἐπὶ τὸν πυλῶνα
Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,
καὶ φωνήσαντες ἐπυνθάνοντο εἰ Σίμων ὁ ἐπικαλούμενος Πέτρος ἐνθάδε ξενίζεται
And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
τοῦ δὲ Πέτρου ἐνθυμουμένου περὶ τοῦ ὁράματος εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ πνεῦμα Ἰδού ἄνδρες τρεῖς ζητοῦσιν σε
While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
ἀλλὰ ἀναστὰς κατάβηθι καὶ πορεύου σὺν αὐτοῖς μηδὲν διακρινόμενος διότι ἐγὼ ἀπέσταλκα αὐτούς
Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
καταβὰς δὲ Πέτρος πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἀπεσταλμενοῦς ἀπὸ τοῦ Κορνηλίου πρὸς αὑτὸν εἶπεν Ἰδού ἐγώ εἰμι ὃν ζητεῖτε· τίς ἡ αἰτία δι' ἣν πάρεστε
Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
οἱ δὲ εἶπον Κορνήλιος ἑκατοντάρχης ἀνὴρ δίκαιος καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν μαρτυρούμενός τε ὑπὸ ὅλου τοῦ ἔθνους τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐχρηματίσθη ὑπὸ ἀγγέλου ἁγίου μεταπέμψασθαί σε εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ῥήματα παρὰ σοῦ
And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
εἰσκαλεσάμενος οὖν αὐτοὺς ἐξένισεν Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ὁ Πέτρος ἐξῆλθεν σὺν αὐτοῖς καί τινες τῶν ἀδελφῶν τῶν ἀπὸ τὴς Ἰόππης συνῆλθον αὐτῷ
Then called he in, them and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
Peter meets Cornelius in his house
καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν Καισάρειαν· ὁ δὲ Κορνήλιος ἦν προσδοκῶν αὐτούς συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς συγγενεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἀναγκαίους φίλους
And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
ὡς δὲ ἐγένετο εἰσελθεῖν τὸν Πέτρον συναντήσας αὐτῷ ὁ Κορνήλιος πεσὼν ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας προσεκύνησεν
And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
ὁ δὲ Πέτρος αὐτὸν ἤγειρεν λέγων Ἀνάστηθι· κἀγὼ αὐτὸς ἄνθρωπός εἰμι
But Peter took up, him saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
καὶ συνομιλῶν αὐτῷ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ εὑρίσκει συνεληλυθότας πολλούς
And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
ἔφη τε πρὸς αὐτούς Ὑμεῖς ἐπίστασθε ὡς ἀθέμιτόν ἐστιν ἀνδρὶ Ἰουδαίῳ κολλᾶσθαι ἢ προσέρχεσθαι ἀλλοφύλῳ· καὶ ἐμοὶ ὁ θεὸς ἔδειξεν μηδένα κοινὸν ἢ ἀκάθαρτον λέγειν ἄνθρωπον·
And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed that me I should not call any man common or unclean.
διὸ καὶ ἀναντιῤῥήτως ἦλθον μεταπεμφθείς πυνθάνομαι οὖν τίνι λόγῳ μετεπέμψασθέ με
Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?
καὶ ὁ Κορνήλιος ἔφη Ἀπὸ τετάρτης ἡμέρας μέχρι ταύτης τῆς ὥρας ἤμην νηστεύων καὶ τὴν ἐννάτην ὥραν προσευχόμενος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ μου καὶ ἰδού ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐνώπιόν μου ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ
And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
καὶ φησίν Κορνήλιε εἰσηκούσθη σου ἡ προσευχὴ καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἐμνήσθησαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ
And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
πέμψον οὖν εἰς Ἰόππην καὶ μετακάλεσαι Σίμωνα ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται Πέτρος οὗτος ξενίζεται ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος βυρσέως παρὰ θάλασσαν ὃς παραγενόμενος λαλήσει σοι
Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
ἐξαυτῆς οὖν ἔπεμψα πρὸς σέ σύ τε καλῶς ἐποίησας παραγενόμενος νῦν οὖν πάντες ἡμεῖς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ πάρεσμεν ἀκοῦσαι πάντα τὰ προστεταγμένα σοι ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ
Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
Peter's speech in the house of Cornelius
Ἀνοίξας δὲ Πέτρος τὸ στόμα εἶπεν Ἐπ ἀληθείας καταλαμβάνομαι ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν προσωπολήπτης ὁ θεός
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
ἀλλ' ἐν παντὶ ἔθνει ὁ φοβούμενος αὐτὸν καὶ ἐργαζόμενος δικαιοσύνην δεκτὸς αὐτῷ ἐστιν
But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
τὸν λόγον ὃν ἀπέστειλεν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ εὐαγγελιζόμενος εἰρήνην διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ οὗτός ἐστιν πάντων κύριος
The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
ὑμεῖς οἴδατε τὸ γενόμενον ῥῆμα καθ' ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἀρξάμενον ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας μετὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐκήρυξεν Ἰωάννης
That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
Ἰησοῦν τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ ὡς ἔχρισεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεὸς πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ δυνάμει ὃς διῆλθεν εὐεργετῶν καὶ ἰώμενος πάντας τοὺς καταδυναστευομένους ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἦν μετ' αὐτοῦ
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐσμεν μάρτυρες πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν ἔν τε τῇ χώρᾳ τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ ὃν ἀνεῖλον κρεμάσαντες ἐπὶ ξύλου
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
τοῦτον ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν ἐμφανῆ γενέσθαι
Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
οὐ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ ἀλλὰ μάρτυσιν τοῖς προκεχειροτονημένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῖν οἵτινες συνεφάγομεν καὶ συνεπίομεν αὐτῷ μετὰ τὸ ἀναστῆναι αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν·
Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
καὶ παρήγγειλεν ἡμῖν κηρύξαι τῷ λαῷ καὶ διαμαρτύρασθαι ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ ὡρισμένος ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ κριτὴς ζώντων καὶ νεκρῶν
And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
τούτῳ πάντες οἱ προφῆται μαρτυροῦσιν ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν λαβεῖν διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ πάντα τὸν πιστεύοντα εἰς αὐτόν
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
The Holy Ghost falls on the Gentiles and they are baptized
Ἔτι λαλοῦντος τοῦ Πέτρου τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἐπέπεσεν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας τὸν λόγον
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς πιστοὶ ὅσοι συνῆλθον τῷ Πέτρῳ ὅτι καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη ἡ δωρεὰ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐκκέχυται·
And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
ἤκουον γὰρ αὐτῶν λαλούντων γλώσσαις καὶ μεγαλυνόντων τὸν θεόν τότε ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πέτρος
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Μήτι τὸ ὕδωρ κωλῦσαί δύναται τις τοῦ μὴ βαπτισθῆναι τούτους οἵτινες τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἔλαβον καθὼς καὶ ἡμεῖς
Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
προσέταξεν τε αὐτοὺς βαπτισθῆναι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου τότε ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας τινάς
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
