Luke 19

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

Καὶ εἰσελθὼν διήρχετο τὴν Ἰεριχώ
1
And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
καὶ ἰδού ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι καλούμενος Ζακχαῖος καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἀρχιτελώνης καὶ οὗτος ἦν πλούσιος·
2
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν τίς ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ὅτι τῇ ἡλικίᾳ μικρὸς ἦν

And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
καὶ προδραμὼν ἔμπροσθεν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ συκομωραίαν ἵνα ἴδῃ αὐτόν ὅτι δι' ἐκείνης ἤμελλεν διέρχεσθαι

And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
καὶ ὡς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον ἀναβλέψας ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶδεν αὐτόν· καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Ζακχαῖε σπεύσας κατάβηθι σήμερον γὰρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου δεῖ με μεῖναι

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
καὶ σπεύσας κατέβη καὶ ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν χαίρων

And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
καὶ ἰδόντες ἅπαντες διεγόγγυζον λέγοντες ὅτι Παρὰ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἀνδρὶ εἰσῆλθεν καταλῦσαι

And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
σταθεὶς δὲ Ζακχαῖος εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν κύριον Ἰδού τὰ ἡμίση τῶν ὑπαρχόντων μου κύριε δίδωμι τοῖς πτωχοῖς καὶ εἴ τινός τι ἐσυκοφάντησα ἀποδίδωμι τετραπλοῦν

And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing by false from any man accusation, I restore him fourfold.
εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Σήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετο καθότι καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν·

And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
ἦλθεν γὰρ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλός
10
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

The Parable of the Pounds

Ἀκουόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ταῦτα προσθεὶς εἶπεν παραβολὴν διὰ τὸ ἐγγὺς αὐτὸν εἶναι Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ δοκεῖν αὐτοὺς ὅτι παραχρῆμα μέλλει ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ ἀναφαίνεσθαι

And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
εἶπεν οὖν Ἄνθρωπός τις εὐγενὴς ἐπορεύθη εἰς χώραν μακρὰν λαβεῖν ἑαυτῷ βασιλείαν καὶ ὑποστρέψαι

He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
καλέσας δὲ δέκα δούλους ἑαυτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δέκα μνᾶς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Πραγματεύσασθε ἕως ἔρχομαι

And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
οἱ δὲ πολῖται αὐτοῦ ἐμίσουν αὐτόν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πρεσβείαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Οὐ θέλομεν τοῦτον βασιλεῦσαι ἐφ' ἡμᾶς

But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will have not this man to reign over us.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐπανελθεῖν αὐτὸν λαβόντα τὴν βασιλείαν καὶ εἶπεν φωνηθῆναι αὐτῷ τοὺς δούλους τούτους οἷς ἔδωκεν τὸ ἀργύριον ἵνα γνῷ τίς τί διεπραγματεύσατο

And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
παρεγένετο δὲ ὁ πρῶτος λέγων Κύριε ἡ μνᾶ σου προσειργάσατο δέκα μνᾶς

Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εὖ ἀγαθὲ δοῦλε ὅτι ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ πιστὸς ἐγένου ἴσθι ἐξουσίαν ἔχων ἐπάνω δέκα πόλεων

And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ δεύτερος λέγων Κύριε Ἡ μνᾶ σου ἐποίησεν πέντε μνᾶς

And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
εἶπεν δὲ καὶ τούτῳ Καὶ σὺ γίνου ἐπάνω πέντε πόλεων
19
And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
καὶ ἕτερος ἦλθεν λέγων Κύριε ἰδού ἡ μνᾶ σου ἣν εἶχον ἀποκειμένην ἐν σουδαρίῳ·
20
And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
ἐφοβούμην γάρ σε ὅτι ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρὸς εἶ αἴρεις ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκας καὶ θερίζεις ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρας

For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst down, not and reapest that thou didst not sow.
λέγει δὲ αὐτῷ Ἐκ τοῦ στόματός σου κρινῶ σε πονηρὲ δοῦλε ᾔδεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρός εἰμι αἴρων ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκα καὶ θερίζων ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρα

And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid down, not and reaping that I did not sow:
καὶ διατί οὐκ ἔδωκάς τὸ ἀργύριον μου ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν καὶ ἐγὼ ἐλθὼν σὺν τόκῳ ἂν ἔπραξα αὐτὸ

Wherefore then thou gavest not my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
καὶ τοῖς παρεστῶσιν εἶπεν Ἄρατε ἀπ' αὐτοῦ τὴν μνᾶν καὶ δότε τῷ τὰς δέκα μνᾶς ἔχοντι

And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔχει δέκα μνᾶς
25
(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι παντὶ τῷ ἔχοντι δοθήσεται ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπ' αὐτοῦ

For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
πλὴν τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου ἐκείνους τοὺς μὴ θελήσαντάς με βασιλεῦσαι ἐπ' αὐτοὺς ἀγάγετε ὧδε καὶ κατασφάξατε ἔμπροσθέν μου
27
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

Καὶ εἰπὼν ταῦτα ἐπορεύετο ἔμπροσθεν ἀναβαίνων εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα

And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤγγισεν εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν ἀπέστειλεν δύο τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ

And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
εἰπὼν Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κατέναντι κώμην ἐν ᾗ εἰσπορευόμενοι εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον ἐφ' ὃν οὐδεὶς πώποτε ἀνθρώπων ἐκάθισεν λύσαντες αὐτὸν ἀγάγετε

Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμᾶς ἐρωτᾷ Διατί λύετε οὕτως ἐρεῖτε αὐτῷ ὅτι Ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
ἀπελθόντες δὲ οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς
32
And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
λυόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν πῶλον εἶπον οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς Τί λύετε τὸν πῶλον
33
And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
οἱ δὲ εἶπον Ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπιῤῥίψαντες ἑαυτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐπὶ τὸν πῶλον ἐπεβίβασαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν

And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set thereon. Jesus
πορευομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ὑπεστρώννυον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ
36
And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
Ἐγγίζοντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἤδη πρὸς τῇ καταβάσει τοῦ Ὄρους τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἤρξαντο ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν χαίροντες αἰνεῖν τὸν θεὸν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ περὶ πασῶν ὧν εἶδον δυνάμεων
37
And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
λέγοντες Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος βασιλεὺς ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου· εἰρήνη ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις
38
Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
καί τινες τῶν Φαρισαίων ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν Διδάσκαλε ἐπιτίμησον τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου

And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν οὗτοι σιωπήσωσιν οἱ λίθοι κεκράξονται

And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

Καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ' αὐτή
41
And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
λέγων ὅτι Εἰ ἔγνως καὶ σὺ καὶ γε ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ σου ταύτῃ τὰ πρὸς εἰρήνην σου· νῦν δὲ ἐκρύβη ἀπὸ ὀφθαλμῶν σου·
42
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
ὅτι ἥξουσιν ἡμέραι ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ περιβαλοῦσιν οἱ ἐχθροί σου χάρακά σοι καὶ περικυκλώσουσίν σε καὶ συνέξουσίν σε πάντοθεν
43
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass round, thee and keep in thee on every side,
καὶ ἐδαφιοῦσίν σε καὶ τὰ τέκνα σου ἐν σοί καὶ οὐκ ἀφήσουσιν ἐν σοί λίθον ἐπὶ λίθῳ· ἀνθ ὧν οὐκ ἔγνως τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς σου

And shall lay even with the ground, thee and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας ἐν αὐτῷ Καὶ ἀγοράζοντας

And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;
λέγων αὐτοῖς Γέγραπται ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς ἐστίν ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε σπήλαιον λῃστῶν

Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθ' ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἀπολέσαι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τοῦ λαοῦ
47
And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
καὶ οὐχ εὕρισκον τὸ τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαὸς γὰρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων
48
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
