τοῦτο γινώσκοντες ὅτι ὁ παλαιὸς ἡμῶν ἄνθρωπος συνεσταυρώθη ἵνα καταργηθῇ τὸ σῶμα τῆς ἁμαρτίας τοῦ μηκέτι δουλεύειν ἡμᾶς τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ·
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth not we should serve sin.
Ἢ ἀγνοεῖτε ἀδελφοί γινώσκουσιν γὰρ νόμον λαλῶ ὅτι ὁ νόμος κυριεύει τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐφ' ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a as man as long he liveth?
ἡ γὰρ ὕπανδρος γυνὴ τῷ ζῶντι ἀνδρὶ δέδεται νόμῳ· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ ὁ ἀνήρ κατήργηται ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ ἀνδρός
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
ἄρα οὖν ζῶντος τοῦ ἀνδρὸς μοιχαλὶς χρηματίσει ἐὰν γένηται ἀνδρὶ ἑτέρῳ· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ ὁ ἀνήρ ἐλευθέρα ἐστὶν ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ μὴ εἶναι αὐτὴν μοιχαλίδα γενομένην ἀνδρὶ ἑτέρῳ
So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
συνήδομαι γὰρ τῷ νόμῳ τοῦ θεοῦ κατὰ τὸν ἔσω ἄνθρωπον
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
ταλαίπωρος ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος· τίς με ῥύσεται ἐκ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ θανάτου τούτου
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σαρκὶ ἀλλ' ἐν πνεύματι εἴπερ πνεῦμα θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν εἰ δέ τις πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ οὐκ ἔχει οὗτος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
τῇ γὰρ ἐλπίδι ἐσώθημεν· ἐλπὶς δὲ βλεπομένη οὐκ ἔστιν ἐλπίς· ὃ γὰρ βλέπει τίς τί καί ἐλπίζει
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
οὔτε ὕψωμα οὔτε βάθος οὔτε τις κτίσις ἑτέρα δυνήσεται ἡμᾶς χωρίσαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ θεοῦ τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
μήπω γὰρ γεννηθέντων μηδὲ πραξάντων τι ἀγαθὸν ἢ κακόν ἵνα ἡ κατ' ἐκλογὴν τοῦ θεοῦ πρόθεσις μένῃ οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἀλλ' ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος
(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of to God according election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
μενοῦνγε ὦ ἄνθρωπε σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι Τί με ἐποίησας οὕτως
Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
Μωσῆς γὰρ γράφει τὴν δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς
For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
ἀλλὰ τί λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ χρηματισμός Κατέλιπον ἐμαυτῷ ἑπτακισχιλίους ἄνδρας οἵτινες οὐκ ἔκαμψαν γόνυ τῇ Βάαλ
But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
εἴ πως παραζηλώσω μου τὴν σάρκα καὶ σώσω τινὰς ἐξ αὐτῶν
If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
Εἰ δέ τινες τῶν κλάδων ἐξεκλάσθησαν σὺ δὲ ἀγριέλαιος ὢν ἐνεκεντρίσθης ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ συγκοινωνὸς τῆς ῥίζης καὶ τῆς πιότητος τῆς ἐλαίας ἐγένου
And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
μηδενὶ κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ ἀποδιδόντες προνοούμενοι καλὰ ἐνώπιον πάντων ἀνθρώπων·
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
εἰ δυνατόν τὸ ἐξ ὑμῶν μετὰ πάντων ἀνθρώπων εἰρηνεύοντες·
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
τὸ γὰρ Οὐ μοιχεύσεις Οὐ φονεύσεις Οὐ κλέψεις Οὐ ψευδομαρτυρήσεις Οὐκ ἐπιθυμήσεις καὶ εἴ τις ἑτέρα ἐντολή ἐν τούτῳ τῷ λόγῳ ἀνακεφαλαιοῦται ἐν τῷ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς ἑαυτόν
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
οἶδα καὶ πέπεισμαι ἐν κυρίῳ Ἰησοῦ ὅτι οὐδὲν κοινὸν δι' ἑαυτοῦ εἰ μὴ τῷ λογιζομένῳ τι κοινὸν εἶναι ἐκείνῳ κοινόν
I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
ὁ γὰρ ἐν τούτοις δουλεύων τῷ Χριστῷ εὐάρεστος τῷ θεῷ καὶ δόκιμος τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
μὴ ἕνεκεν βρώματος κατάλυε τὸ ἔργον τοῦ θεοῦ πάντα μὲν καθαρά ἀλλὰ κακὸν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τῷ διὰ προσκόμματος ἐσθίοντι
For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
οὐ γὰρ τολμήσω λαλεῖν τι ὧν οὐ κατειργάσατο Χριστὸς δι' ἐμοῦ εἰς ὑπακοὴν ἐθνῶν λόγῳ καὶ ἔργῳ
For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed,
εὐδόκησαν γὰρ Μακεδονία καὶ Ἀχαΐα κοινωνίαν τινὰ ποιήσασθαι εἰς τοὺς πτωχοὺς τῶν ἁγίων τῶν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ
For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.
ἵνα μή τις εἴπῃ ὅτι εἰς τὸ ἐμὸν ὄνομα ἐβάπτισα
Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
ἐβάπτισα δὲ καὶ τὸν Στεφανᾶ οἶκον λοιπὸν οὐκ οἶδα εἴ τινα ἄλλον ἐβάπτισα
And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
ὅτι τὸ μωρὸν τοῦ θεοῦ σοφώτερον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐστίν καὶ τὸ ἀσθενὲς τοῦ θεοῦ ἰσχυρότερον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐστίν
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
οὐ γὰρ ἔκρινα τοῦ εἰδέναι τι ἐν ὑμῖν εἰ μὴ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν καὶ τοῦτον ἐσταυρωμένον
For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
ἵνα ἡ πίστις ὑμῶν μὴ ᾖ ἐν σοφίᾳ ἀνθρώπων ἀλλ' ἐν δυνάμει θεοῦ
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
ἀλλὰ καθὼς γέγραπται Ἃ ὀφθαλμὸς οὐκ εἶδεν καὶ οὖς οὐκ ἤκουσεν καὶ ἐπὶ καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἀνέβη ἃ ἡτοίμασεν ὁ θεὸς τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
τίς γὰρ οἶδεν ἀνθρώπων τὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰ μὴ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τὸ ἐν αὐτῷ οὕτως καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐδεὶς οἶδεν εἰ μὴ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
ψυχικὸς δὲ ἄνθρωπος οὐ δέχεται τὰ τοῦ πνεύματος τοῦ θεοῦ μωρία γὰρ αὐτῷ ἐστιν καὶ οὐ δύναται γνῶναι ὅτι πνευματικῶς ἀνακρίνεται·
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
ἔτι γὰρ σαρκικοί ἐστε ὅπου γὰρ ἐν ὑμῖν ζῆλος καὶ ἔρις καὶ διχοστασίαι οὐχὶ σαρκικοί ἐστε καὶ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον περιπατεῖτε
For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
ὅταν γὰρ λέγῃ τις Ἐγὼ μέν εἰμι Παύλου ἕτερος δέ Ἐγὼ Ἀπολλῶ οὐχὶ σαρκικοί ἐστε
For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
ὥστε οὔτε ὁ φυτεύων ἐστίν τι οὔτε ὁ ποτίζων ἀλλ' ὁ αὐξάνων θεός
So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
εἰ δέ τις ἐποικοδομεῖ ἐπὶ τὸν θεμέλιον τοῦτον χρυσόν ἄργυρον λίθους τιμίους ξύλα χόρτον καλάμην
Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον μενεῖ ὃ ἐπωκοδόμησεν μισθὸν λήψεται
If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον κατακαήσεται ζημιωθήσεται αὐτὸς δὲ σωθήσεται οὕτως δὲ ὡς διὰ πυρός
If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
εἴ τις τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ φθείρει φθερεῖ τοῦτον ὁ θεός· ὁ γὰρ ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ἅγιός ἐστιν οἵτινές ἐστε ὑμεῖς
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; the for temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
Μηδεὶς ἑαυτὸν ἐξαπατάτω· εἴ τις δοκεῖ σοφὸς εἶναι ἐν ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ μωρὸς γενέσθω ἵνα γένηται σοφός
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
ὥστε μηδεὶς καυχάσθω ἐν ἀνθρώποις· πάντα γὰρ ὑμῶν ἐστιν
Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
Οὕτως ἡμᾶς λογιζέσθω ἄνθρωπος ὡς ὑπηρέτας Χριστοῦ καὶ οἰκονόμους μυστηρίων θεοῦ
Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
ὅ δὲ λοιπὸν ζητεῖται ἐν τοῖς οἰκονόμοις ἵνα πιστός τις εὑρεθῇ
Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
ὥστε μὴ πρὸ καιροῦ τι κρίνετε ἕως ἂν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος ὃς καὶ φωτίσει τὰ κρυπτὰ τοῦ σκότους καὶ φανερώσει τὰς βουλὰς τῶν καρδιῶν· καὶ τότε ὁ ἔπαινος γενήσεται ἑκάστῳ ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the the Lord come, who both will bring to light hidden things of the darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
δοκῶ γάρ ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἡμᾶς τοὺς ἀποστόλους ἐσχάτους ἀπέδειξεν ὡς ἐπιθανατίους ὅτι θέατρον ἐγενήθημεν τῷ κόσμῳ καὶ ἀγγέλοις καὶ ἀνθρώποις
For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
ὡς μὴ ἐρχομένου δέ μου πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐφυσιώθησάν τινες·
Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you.
Ὅλως ἀκούεται ἐν ὑμῖν πορνεία καὶ τοιαύτη πορνεία ἥτις οὐδὲ ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ὀνομάζεται ὥστε γυναῖκά τινα τοῦ πατρὸς ἔχειν
It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
νῦνὶ δὲ ἔγραψα ὑμῖν μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι ἐάν τις ἀδελφὸς ὀνομαζόμενος ᾖ πόρνος ἢ πλεονέκτης ἢ εἰδωλολάτρης ἢ λοίδορος ἢ μέθυσος ἢ ἅρπαξ τῷ τοιούτῳ μηδὲ συνεσθίειν
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
Τολμᾷ τις ὑμῶν πρᾶγμα ἔχων πρὸς τὸν ἕτερον κρίνεσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν ἀδίκων καὶ οὐχὶ ἐπὶ τῶν ἁγίων;
Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
καὶ ταῦτά τινες ἦτε· ἀλλὰ ἀπελούσασθε ἀλλὰ ἡγιάσθητε ἀλλ' ἐδικαιώθητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Πάντα μοι ἔξεστιν ἀλλ' οὐ πάντα συμφέρει πάντα μοι ἔξεστιν ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐγὼ ἐξουσιασθήσομαι ὑπό τινος
All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
φεύγετε τὴν πορνείαν· πᾶν ἁμάρτημα ὃ ἐὰν ποιήσῃ ἄνθρωπος ἐκτὸς τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν· ὁ δὲ πορνεύων εἰς τὸ ἴδιον σῶμα ἁμαρτάνει
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
Περὶ δὲ ὧν ἐγράψατε μοι καλὸν ἀνθρώπῳ γυναικὸς μὴ ἅπτεσθαι·
Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
διὰ δὲ τὰς πορνείας ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα ἐχέτω καὶ ἑκάστη τὸν ἴδιον ἄνδρα ἐχέτω
Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
τῇ γυναικὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ τὴν ὀφειλομένην εὔνοιαν ἀποδιδότω ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ τῷ ἀνδρί
Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
ἡ γυνὴ τοῦ ἰδίου σώματος οὐκ ἐξουσιάζει ἀλλ' ὁ ἀνήρ ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ ἰδίου σώματος οὐκ ἐξουσιάζει ἀλλ' ἡ γυνή
The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
μὴ ἀποστερεῖτε ἀλλήλους εἰ μὴ τι ἂν ἐκ συμφώνου πρὸς καιρὸν ἵνα σχολάζητε τῇ νηστείᾳ καὶ τῇ προσευχῇ καὶ πάλιν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ συνέρχησθε ἵνα μὴ πειράζῃ ὑμᾶς ὁ Σατανᾶς διὰ τὴν ἀκρασίαν ὑμῶν
Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
θέλω γὰρ πάντας ἀνθρώπους εἶναι ὡς καὶ ἐμαυτόν· ἀλλ' ἕκαστος ἴδιον χάρισμα ἔχει ἐκ θεοῦ ὅς μὲν οὕτως ὅς δὲ οὕτως
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
τοῖς δὲ γεγαμηκόσιν παραγγέλλω οὐκ ἐγὼ ἀλλ' ὁ κύριος γυναῖκα ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς μὴ χωρισθῆναι
And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
ἐὰν δὲ καὶ χωρισθῇ μενέτω ἄγαμος ἢ τῷ ἀνδρὶ καταλλαγήτω καὶ ἄνδρα γυναῖκα μὴ ἀφιέναι
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
Τοῖς δὲ λοιποῖς ἐγὼ λέγω οὐχ ὁ κύριος· εἴ τις ἀδελφὸς γυναῖκα ἔχει ἄπιστον καὶ αὕτη συνευδοκεῖ οἰκεῖν μετ' αὐτοῦ μὴ ἀφιέτω αὐτήν·
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
καὶ γυνὴ ἥτις ἔχει ἄνδρα ἄπιστον καὶ αὑτὸς συνευδοκεῖ οἰκεῖν μετ' αὐτῆς μὴ ἀφιέτω αὐτόν
And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
ἡγίασται γὰρ ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ ἄπιστος ἐν τῇ γυναικί καὶ ἡγίασται ἡ γυνὴ ἡ ἄπιστος ἐν τῷ ἀνδρί· ἐπεὶ ἄρα τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν ἀκάθαρτά ἐστιν νῦν δὲ ἅγιά ἐστιν
For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
τί γὰρ οἶδας γύναι εἰ τὸν ἄνδρα σώσεις ἢ τί οἶδας ἄνερ εἰ τὴν γυναῖκα σώσεις
For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
περιτετμημένος τις ἐκλήθη μὴ ἐπισπάσθω· ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ τις ἐκλήθη μὴ περιτεμνέσθω
Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.
τιμῆς ἠγοράσθητε· μὴ γίνεσθε δοῦλοι ἀνθρώπων
Ye are bought with a price; be ye not the servants of men.
Νομίζω οὖν τοῦτο καλὸν ὑπάρχειν διὰ τὴν ἐνεστῶσαν ἀνάγκην ὅτι καλὸν ἀνθρώπῳ τὸ οὕτως εἶναι
I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be.
μεμέρισται ἡ γυνὴ καὶ ἡ παρθένος ἡ ἄγαμος μεριμνᾷ τὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἵνα ᾖ ἁγία καὶ σώματι καὶ πνεύματι· ἡ δὲ γαμήσασα μεριμνᾷ τὰ τοῦ κόσμου πῶς ἀρέσει τῷ ἀνδρί
There is difference between also a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
Εἰ δέ τις ἀσχημονεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν παρθένον αὐτοῦ νομίζει ἐὰν ᾖ ὑπέρακμος καὶ οὕτως ὀφείλει γίνεσθαι ὃ θέλει ποιείτω οὐχ ἁμαρτάνει γαμείτωσαν
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
Γυνὴ δέδεται νόμῳ ἐφ' ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς· ἐὰν δὲ κοιμηθῇ ὁ ἀνήρ αὐτῆς ἐλευθέρα ἐστὶν ᾧ θέλει γαμηθῆναι μόνον ἐν κυρίῳ
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
εἰ δέ τις δοκεῖ εἰδέναι τι οὐδέπω οὐδὲν ἔγνωκεν καθὼς δεῖ γνῶναι·
And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
εἰ δέ τις ἀγαπᾷ τὸν θεόν οὗτος ἔγνωσται ὑπ' αὐτοῦ
But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
Ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐν πᾶσιν ἡ γνῶσις· τινὲς δὲ τῇ συνειδήσει τοῦ εἰδώλου ἕως ἄρτι ὡς εἰδωλόθυτον ἐσθίουσιν καὶ ἡ συνείδησις αὐτῶν ἀσθενὴς οὖσα μολύνεται
Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
ἐὰν γάρ τις ἴδῃ σὲ τὸν ἔχοντα γνῶσιν ἐν εἰδωλείῳ κατακείμενον οὐχὶ ἡ συνείδησις αὐτοῦ ἀσθενοῦς ὄντος οἰκοδομηθήσεται εἰς τὸ τὰ εἰδωλόθυτα ἐσθίειν
For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not be the conscience of him which is weak emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
Μὴ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον ταῦτα λαλῶ ἢ οὐχὶ καὶ ὁ νόμος ταῦτα λέγει
Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
εἰ ἄλλοι τῆς ἐξουσίας ὑμῶν μετέχουσιν οὐ μᾶλλον ἡμεῖς Ἀλλ οὐκ ἐχρησάμεθα τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ ταύτῃ ἀλλὰ πάντα στέγομεν ἵνα μὴ ἐγκοπήν τινα δῶμεν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ
If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
ἐγὼ δὲ οὐδενὶ ἐχρησάμην τούτων οὐκ ἔγραψα δὲ ταῦτα ἵνα οὕτως γένηται ἐν ἐμοί· καλὸν γάρ μοι μᾶλλον ἀποθανεῖν ἤ τὸ καύχημά μου ἵνα τις κενώσῃ
But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be done so unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make void. my glorying
ἐγενόμην τοῖς ἀσθενέσιν ὡς ἀσθενής ἵνα τοὺς ἀσθενεῖς κερδήσω· τοῖς πᾶσιν γέγονα τὰ πάντα ἵνα πάντως τινὰς σώσω
To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
μηδὲ εἰδωλολάτραι γίνεσθε καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ὥς γέγραπται Ἐκάθισεν ὁ λαὸς φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν καὶ ἀνέστησαν παίζειν
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
μηδὲ πορνεύωμεν καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπόρνευσαν καὶ ἔπεσον ἐν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ εἴκοσι τρεῖς χιλιάδες.
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
μηδὲ ἐκπειράζωμεν τὸν Χριστόν καθὼς καί τινες αὐτῶν ἐπείρασαν καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ὄφεων ἀπώλοντο
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
μηδὲ γογγύζετε καθὼς καί τινες αὐτῶν ἐγόγγυσαν καὶ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τοῦ ὀλοθρευτοῦ
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
τί οὖν φημι ὅτι εἴδωλον τί ἐστιν ἢ ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτον τί ἐστιν;
What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
εἰ δέ τις καλεῖ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀπίστων καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking question no for conscience sake.
ἐὰν δέ τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ Τοῦτο εἰδωλόθυτόν ἐστιν μὴ ἐσθίετε δι' ἐκεῖνον τὸν μηνύσαντα καὶ τὴν συνείδησιν· τοῦ γὰρ κυρίου ἡ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for sake: conscience for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
εἴτε οὖν ἐσθίετε εἴτε πίνετε εἴτε τι ποιεῖτε πάντα εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ ποιεῖτε
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς εἰδέναι ὅτι παντὸς ἀνδρὸς ἡ κεφαλὴ ὁ Χριστός ἐστιν κεφαλὴ δὲ γυναικὸς ὁ ἀνήρ κεφαλὴ δὲ Χριστοῦ ὁ θεός
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
πᾶς ἀνὴρ προσευχόμενος ἢ προφητεύων κατὰ κεφαλῆς ἔχων καταισχύνει τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ
Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
ἀνὴρ μὲν γὰρ οὐκ ὀφείλει κατακαλύπτεσθαι τὴν κεφαλήν εἰκὼν καὶ δόξα θεοῦ ὑπάρχων· γυνὴ δὲ δόξα ἀνδρός ἐστιν
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἀνὴρ ἐκ γυναικός ἀλλὰ γυνὴ ἐξ ἀνδρός·
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
καὶ γὰρ οὐκ ἐκτίσθη ἀνὴρ διὰ τὴν γυναῖκα ἀλλὰ γυνὴ διὰ τὸν ἄνδρα
Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
πλὴν οὔτε ἀνὴρ χωρὶς γυναικὸς οὔτε γυνὴ χωρὶς ἀνδρὸς ἐν κυρίῳ·
Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
ὥσπερ γὰρ ἡ γυνὴ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνδρός οὕτως καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ διὰ τῆς γυναικός· τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ
For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
ἡ οὐδὲ αὐτὴ ἤ φύσις διδάσκει ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἀνὴρ μὲν ἐὰν κομᾷ ἀτιμία αὐτῷ ἐστιν
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is unto a shame him?
Εἰ δέ τις δοκεῖ φιλόνεικος εἶναι ἡμεῖς τοιαύτην συνήθειαν οὐκ ἔχομεν οὐδὲ αἱ ἐκκλησίαι τοῦ θεοῦ
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ συνερχομένων ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ ἀκούω σχίσματα ἐν ὑμῖν ὑπάρχειν καὶ μέρος τι πιστεύω
For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly it. believe
δοκιμαζέτω δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἑαυτόν καὶ οὕτως ἐκ τοῦ ἄρτου ἐσθιέτω καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ποτηρίου πινέτω·
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
εἰ δέ τις πεινᾷ ἐν οἴκῳ ἐσθιέτω ἵνα μὴ εἰς κρίμα συνέρχησθε. Τὰ δὲ λοιπὰ ὡς ἂν ἔλθω διατάξομαι
And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come together not unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
Ἐὰν ταῖς γλώσσαις τῶν ἀνθρώπων λαλῶ καὶ τῶν ἀγγέλων ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχω γέγονα χαλκὸς ἠχῶν ἢ κύμβαλον ἀλαλάζον
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
ὅτε ἤμην νήπιος ὡς νήπιος ἐλάλουν ὡς νήπιος ἐφρόνουν ὡς νήπιος· ἐλογιζόμην ὅτε δέ γέγονα ἀνήρ κατήργηκα τὰ τοῦ νηπίου
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
ὁ γὰρ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ ἀλλὰ τῶ θεῷ· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἀκούει πνεύματι δὲ λαλεῖ μυστήρια·
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
